Time to stop pussy-footing around nuisance travellers
Opinion by Ian Midgley ...
IT SEEMS there is one law for travellers and one law for everyone else after all.

DISRUPTION: Travellers parade horses in Hawthorn Avenue.
Just ask the poor, council tax-paying, folk of Hawthorn Avenue who were trapped inside their homes as a lawless horse parade took place outside their houses last weekend.
I know I'm going to get letters about this. You always do from right-on numpties every time you dare to criticise travellers who pitch up in someone else's neighbourhood and make everyone's lives a misery for weeks on end.

But how on earth is it acceptable to allow dozens of horse and carts to be raced up and down a quiet residential street, making residents feel like prisoners in their own homes?
One local who called the police to complain the roads were blocked and 4x4s were parked on every pavement was advised to stay indoors. Now just imagine what the boys in blue and the council's response would be if you or I were to race a horse and cart up and down our streets until 11pm on a Saturday night?
I suspect we'd get pretty short shrift.
And what will the response be when the travellers are finally moved on Haltemprice Street, leaving it an absolute tip?
Remember how vigilant Hull City Council was in pursuing the lady who left three bags of clothes outside a charity collection bin for fly-tipping? I wonder if they'll be quite so energetic in holding the travellers to account.
I doubt it. They're too scared. It's time to stop pussy-footing around.
I'm all for cultural difference, but not when it makes people feel too scared to be in their own homes.

“Well said Ian, what a pity your paper doesn't do an in depth interview with Humberside police (as has been mentioned elsewhere) and ask them why they are prepared to just stand by and let people break the law quite openly.
It seems to me that there is one policy for the normal law abiding folk and another for people who just hold the law in contempt.”

“I totally agree, it's what everyone is thnking and wants to hear I'm sure. What a pity it is not on the main site, I had to get it by clicking on 'politics' otherwisw there would be so many more comments. This needs to be followed up for everyone's sake as they are causing havoc in many many areas around the city not only on the sites they take over but the roads as well. THANK YOU HDM.”
