Few parts of the world are as alluring to visit as France, given its fascinating history and culture and the renowned romance of major cities like Paris. However, we all welcome the chance to save some money on an overseas holiday – so what can you do to ensure that your next French break is as kind to your wallet as it is to your senses?

Take the ferry there

Booking a ferry to France is an especially good idea if you want to save money while still enjoying convenience and comfort. The shortest route, Dover to Calais is in particular demand, which means that there are some great deals on offer from the many competing ferry companies – as long as you are happy to take the time to shop around.

Book cheaper accommodation

If you’re anticipating a French holiday rental, make it a self-catering one... or depending on your exact needs, you could consider one of the various independently-run campsites or a rural bed and breakfast. You’ll probably find it easier to find affordable accommodation in France than would be the case with similar properties in the UK, so don’t book your accommodation too hastily.

Head for somewhere undiscovered

There’s no reason why you need to choose the usual tourist throngs for your next French holiday. This is a country that has loads of things to do well away from the most popular sites, whatever your interests.

For example, rather than the well trodden regions in the south of the country, why not give some of the underrated northern parts a go? Those with an interest in beach holidays, meanwhile, may plump for somewhere like Biarritz over the more costly Cote D’Azur.

Travel like a local

Don’t fall for the usual expensive travel options. Those in Paris, for example, will certainly be rewarded financially if they make use of the Metro, taking the time to learn its lines. Taking the Metro will also often get you to your desired destination quicker.

Alternatively, you could always simply plan your day so that it’s possible to walk from one attraction to the next, which not only increases your familiarity with the city, but also does your physical fitness no harm!

Take advantage of free museum admission

Yes, you read that correctly... most Paris museums grant you free entry to their permanent exhibitions on the first Sunday of every month. Knowing about free admission to various attractions in advance can certainly assist you in your French holiday planning.
