Subway Street to be reopened as Hessle Road traders welcome parking plans
TRADERS have welcomed the news that a street off Hessle Road will be reopened to ease parking problems.
Subway Street was blocked off years ago when thousands of homes were knocked down.

Now work should begin shortly on opening it, providing a link to Clive Sullivan Way and increasing parking spaces.
Hairdresser Donna Finn, who owns Fe'male Ego on Hessle Road, has been campaigning to open up the street for seven years.

She also wants West Dock Avenue and Harrow Street reopened.
She said: "This is fantastic news and certainly a step in the right direction.
"We have been trying to get these roads reopened and the yellow lines lifted for years.
"It will help create a lot more parking spaces and we need to make sure the yellow lines are lifted."
Mrs Finn also believes it will help with traffic problems along the street.
She said: "It should ease congestion in Hessle Road and, if the all three are opened, it will make a considerable difference.
"It will also help traders with deliveries and make it easier for lorries to turn.
"Slowly but surely we are getting there."
A 21-day consultation will begin this week on the new traffic regulation order. If there are no objections, work could start within weeks.
Paul Hammond, partner of furniture store Carl Hammonds, has also welcomed the move.
He said: "We have been here 50 years and I have worked here for 28 years.
"When the council created parking bays and closed the roads, it was a mess.
"Parking is a nightmare and it is something our customers always complain about. It is even a nightmare for the traders themselves.
"Opening the streets will really help for deliveries as well.
"We have large lorries to deliver big items such as sofas and beds and they have to double park.
"If the roads are opened, the lorries can turn down them.
"This is very welcome news."
Hull City Council has confirmed plans to open Subway Street.
Graham Hall, assistant head of service for transport and asset management, said: "The proposed changes to Subway Street will be to remove the existing physical barrier and increase the amount of parking spaces available for people visiting the shops in Hessle Road and other businesses in the area."
Over the next couple of months, the council will review the parking restrictions on other streets south of Hessle Road.

“If I were a trader, one thing I would be onto the council about is the timing of the traffic lights at the Junction of Hessle Rd and St Georges Road.
Traffic on Hessle Road needs to be given more priority. This bottleneck during the day always has queuing traffic, this puts people off travelling onto Hessle Road, especially to the shops at the Town end. Ease of access is key the key to success.
Another 20-30 second of green light per change for the traffic on Hessle Road shouldn't be too difficult to sort by the council surely.”

“Many of the roads that used to run from Hessle road that are now blocked off are a nightmare to negotiate certainly for a large part of the day. Fork lift trucks seem to be oblivious to the highway code. People parking on pavements and double yellows to stop and get a bite to eat from a burger van. Lorries being loaded whilst double parked by fork lifts that pull out regardless of other vehicles movements. I have nearly been wiped out several times on West Dock street, Subway Street and Gillet Street. The normal rules of the road seem to be disregarded completely in this area.”

“That's great news for the shoppers and traders in the area.
If I'm honest, I didn't ever think the council would be persuaded to re-open Subway Street as they have such little common sense when it comes to road network management.
Make sure they DON'T try and make the street a 'pay and display zone' when they remove the double yellow lines. I certainly wouldn't put it past this council to try and sneak it in overnight!!”

“Scoobyears:
GAP plant machinery ARE at fault at it is outside their depot in subway street.! It is nothing to do with contractors who hire equipment, this is GAP's base of operations. They store plant machinery outside blocking the pavement and regularly have their own works vehicles parked both sides of the road (and sometimes on the pavement).”

FYI.. Gap plant machinery is a plant rental company and as such it will have no control over were its equipment is sited, contact the contractor directly and raise your concerns with them.
if you are having to walk in the road then it should be fenced off from live traffic to protect you, if its not, then they (the contractor)are at fault.. happy to help”
