Railway chaos is expected today as heavy snow sweeps across Britain.

Train operator East Coast is advising passengers to check services before travelling.

Weather forecasters predict a band of heavy snow will cross the country from west to east this afternoon and evening.

Ticket restrictions for East Coast services are being lifted today for all journeys to and from London King's Cross after 10am.

A spokesman said: "Heavier snowfalls are expected between Peterborough and the North East this afternoon and evening."

Passengers are advised to wear warm clothing, keep mobile phones charged and carry a hot drink.
