HULL: The Transport Secretary will visit the city in April to discuss proposed improvements to Castle Street.

Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson and Councillor Martin Mancey, portfolio holder for environ- ment and transport at the city council, met Patrick McLoughlin yesterday.

Cllr Mancey said: "The Secretary of State agreed Castle Street is high priority for the next spending review, and work on site could start as early as 2016.

"He agreed it was important to not only solve the traffic problem on this route to the port and the future Siemens development, but also included quality pedestrian facilities.

"He acknowledged such facilities were an important consideration as the scheme must contribute to the regeneration of the old Fruit Market and the construction of other projects such as a new cruise terminal and art gallery."

The council is now considering opening a design competition for a land bridge to cross the road.

“Can't the Council get it's priorities right? They keep banging on about getting pedestrians over the road to the marina? While some of the other schemes mentioned might be important to the City, the priority has to be a motorway standard road from the end of the M62 through to the East of Hull.
'...work could start as early as 2016' ? Proposals and promised money for the improvement of the bottle-neck have been on the cards for years.
And, where were the other MPs, especially Carl Turner, all those who represent Hull and the E.Riding should be winding up the pressure on the Government to have work started this year, never mind 2016.”

“Let's hope this isn't another jolly boys outing in the footsteps of his many predecessors who've all offered sympathetic rhetoric yet no commitment”

“If this doesn't turn out well, it'll be a big kick in the teeth for East Hull and East Hull and a bad case of the clap for the rest of us.”
