PEOPLE across East Yorkshire are bracing themselves for the first heavy snowfall of the year.

Sunday update: East Yorkshire coated in snow

.

Parts of East Yorkshire could see up to 10cm of snow today, causing hazardous conditions for drivers.

Officers from Hull and East Riding councils have insisted they are prepared for the wintry weather.

John Skidmore, head of streetscene services at East Riding council, said: "The council is well-prepared for any winter weather events that might occur in the East Riding over the weekend.

"All salt barns are fully-stocked and the council's winter maintenance team is receiving regular updates and constantly monitoring the weather."

The Met Office has issued an amber alert from noon today.

Temperatures are not expected to rise above 2C.

PC Keith Ward, casualty reduction officer for Hull, said people should consider staying at home.

He said: "People should only travel if necessary. I wouldn't like to be travelling a long distance in the weather we are expecting, so put it off if you can.

"If you do have to travel, plan your journey and give yourself extra time.

"During heavy snow, the number of serious collisions usually falls, but we do get minor bumps, normally caused by people braking too heavily and then skidding."

Hull City Council said it has more than 50,000 tonnes of grit in stock. A spokesman for the authority said gritting updates will be given on its website, Facebook and Twitter pages.

Dan Williams, of the Met Office, said: "It should be a reasonably bright start to the day, but it will cloud over later on into the afternoon and evening, which is when we will start to see some snowfall.

"It is likely to cause some travel disruption. Temperatures will also drop overnight, so there is a chance any snow, rain or sleet that has fallen will freeze.

"We would encourage people to keep checking the weather forecast and looking out for travel information."
