U-turn over Beverley cobbles removal
EAST Riding Council has given in to public pressure and agreed to retain stone setts in Beverley's historic Saturday Market.
Representatives from the council met with members of the Civic Society at County Hall this afternoon.
The council says it proposed amendments to the scheme, based on suggestions made by English Heritage at a meeting held last week, which will see almost all of the setts taken up and re-laid, by hand, to improve the surface finish.
English Heritage is in full support of the scheme revisions.

“Parnaby had a public consultation one Saturday with just over 300 people giving their approval. How many were out of town shoppers and what smaller number remaining were Beverlonians? 500 marchers trumps parnos survey!”

“NorthBar, I would like you to elaborate on which comments, or part of them are inaccurate! My issue isn't the fact that I believe that these cobbles should be replaced, to be frank I've got other things to concern myself with, but I just detest the fact that a minority of people who have a particular view believe that it is the wish of the majority and railroad their thoughts, wants or needs through. Previous reports in the HDM suggested that five hundred people marched against the removal of the cobbles, if this is true this is just under 2% of the population of Beverley. So what do the other 98% think? We will probably never know and many probably don't care. Having said that I believe that we elected our Police and Crime Commissioner on not much more of a percentage turnout, so I guess that this is just what democracy looks like when some people are more interested in BIg Brother, X Factor or what the latest celebrity is up to!”

“That's a good comprise which will help to retain the character of Beverley! I am one of those who is pleased that the council have decide to take notice of the views of the residents views.
Despite the inaccuracy of other comments, York has done a lot to retain the character of its town. I am glad that in this instance Beverley is doing the same.
The market square will now have the best of both worlds and receive a well wanted refurbishment!
If your view is otherwise frankly you should have demonstrated to have them replaced, your would have been a lonely figure though!”

“So who is county hall is going to take responsibility for this farce and the different tales that have come from the conservatives as to why they were to be removed?
This reinforces the fact that Tories are out of touch. The 6 ward councillors should have been campaigning to save the setts. Yet we've not heard anything from them. Surely proof if it were needed that they are yes men and women to Parnabys suggestions! and are just in it for themselves, fatcat councillors, some fatter than others.”

“smartguy1 In answer to your question an additional £150,000 to relay the cobbles is what this endeavour by the protesters has cost. Vandutchman, are you suggesting that there are only two types of slabs to lay, cobbles or marble? I'm sure that there is something else that is more modern, tasteful and more suitable than marble. I would also question that Leeds did this fifteen years ago, try around 2004/5/6 if you are referring to Briggate! Marmadukeland, I don't particularly disagree, however there is a place for preserving history, for example in a museum or in the case of York The Shambles. However if you look down Stonegate in York you don't see cobbles, this on a street that can boast Guy Falkes as a previous resident and the lack of cobbles does not, in my opinion, detract from it's historical attraction. If you take preservation for historical reasons as the overarching argument then you might as well lobby for gas lights to be reinstalled in Saturday Market and banning anything other than horses and maybe a Handsom Cab or two from navigating the streets. The thing is that at some point we have to move on, otherwise society would never progress. I think that Morris Marina cars need preserving, but I wouldn't argue that the sale of new MG6s should be banned in some outdated attempt to preserve the Marina. To quote local lad Reece Shearsmith et Al, "Don't touch the things, this is a local shop for local people, there's nothing for you here". Balance is needed, tasteful change and preservation in the right places. Saturday Market is not the right place. It needs to be modern with a historical twist. Around The Minster is the place for preservation. Someone71, nail head on!”

Be fair, if it wasnt for minority groups taking the trouble to object and use their time demonstrating we would hve all kinds of monstrosities to live with.”

“Why not replace the original cobbles with bits of tarmac as seen in front of the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull?
Or simply tarmac over them as seen on Bankside ?”

“Re: Dave_Best Thursday, January 24 2013, 5:58PM
"tasteful modernisation" Leeds City Council tried that fifteen years ago when they updated their pedestrianised streets with smooth Italian marble.
Perfect for those high heels, and aging feet - until it rained.
They had more injury claims than ever before. It all had to be replaced again.
Once those cobbles have been turned, they will be fine for another hundred years.”
