“Of course the figures have gone down. If you live with a partner who works then you can only claim Job Seekers for six months. After this it is up to them to support you so you come off the Unemployment register. The only way to stay on it is to still sign on to claim National Insurance Credits and then you will be still recorded as Unemployed. The vast majority don't bother.”

“I am an Engineer working in the Midlands and we support the UK car, rail and Nuclear industry. We are taking work hand over fist out of China and Eastern Europe due to the quality and high technology of the products we produce. Costs are on the increase in China and if you don't have large volumes to ship they are uneconomical. Hull's massive problem is poor skills and donkey's years of Labour........I am from Hull but god it's depressing and people in Hull still blame the new government for the sorry state of the City, despite 13 years of Labour. Don't pin your hopes on Siemens either.....I know loads of their technicians and field reps.”

    “by Arrogate,

You are partly correct, though our present difficulites are more caused by the fact that post 2002 Gordon Brown went on a mad spending spree.

Though this was after he had sold all our gold off at record low prices.

Why where they at record low prices?

Well because the imbecile that he is, he anounced to the world he was going to do it before hand, so all the traders drove down the price of Gold so they couild pick up a bargain, at our expense.

Even without the emergence of developing countries we would be in trouble.

To be honest I didn't like to mention it, the Labour fanatics on here can't face the truth, I didn't want to depress them further.

Not just 1.2 billion Chinese, but also 1 Billion Indians, quarter of a billion Indonesian's, 200 million Brazilians, and another couple of billion or so people in the devloping world, all competing for the same resources as us.

But don't worry, everything will be OK when that nice millionaire Mr Miliband becomes Prime Minister.”

“Why do people still cling to the Victorian notion of employment as we know it?

Technology has been replacing people in the workplace for decades [how manyb typer-setters does HDM employ, for example?], yet no politician has ever addressed the issue of the post-industrial age in which we now live: ie - millions of people with nowt to do. 'Human Resources', a chilling phrase if ever there was one, will be almost completely obsolete before long, except for a few people in white coats & safety glasses, remotely overseeing the smooth running of the equipment in sterile, darkened [to save energy] environments. Some companies already have automated warehouses, for example.

Factor in the the meteoric rise of the far east, and we've had it.”

“Some of the comments on here are absolutely ridiculous. Those people going on about getting rid of this government - do you really think anything will change if Labour come into power? Of course it won't, it's their fault we're in the mess we're in in the first place and the Tories and Lib Dems are getting all this bad press because they're sorting out the pile of sh*t that Gordon Brown and Tony Blair left us with.

I for one hope that the Tories get in again in the next election, though I'm doubtful of this - simply because of the low IQ of people who think that Labour are going to be our saviours. They're not.”

“Are those 12,000 new jobs between September and November people being taken on for Xmas jobs, who will now be unemployed again?”

“The statistics quoted are for the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber which has a population of 5.3 million. The article states 241,000 unemployed which is 8.8% of the Yorkshire and Humber working population, which is 2,740,000 people. Hullgirl, you are not far wrong in the 2010 census Hull had a population of 258,828 and the greater urban area of Hull 573,300.
Numbers of working age in Hull is about 132,000 with unemployed around 20,000, just over 15% which is far higher (almost double) than the whole of Yorkshire and Humber.”

    “@worker1111

Pre 2002 we wasnt living beyond our means just China came to the table and started eating up the resources that the west had took for granted, so everything in turn costs more money if India had the same kind of government like what China has it would be game over for us your talking about a billion people each country who in the end are all going to want iphones and all that B S, wait another 10 years when you start paying £10 for a box of cornflakes to see wher the real future battles are going to come from.”
