Union to ballot council staff over action
A union representing hundreds of workers at Hull's biggest employer is set to ballot its members over possible industrial action.
Officials from the Unite union say they have been left with no option after Hull City Council announced proposals to change staff terms and conditions.

The changes include reducing the current lump sum early retirement payment by nearly 50 per cent.
Other proposals feature reducing protection payments relating to basic pay in cases of job restructuring from five years to six months and reducing the re-deployment period from six to three months before redundancy is considered.
Dave Mathieson, Unite's convenor at the council, said the authority was not willing to continue further negotiations over the changes.
"I am appalled at the decision and the intransigence of the council," he said.
"This leaves Unite no alternative but to ballot the members for industrial action and seek legal advice on this move," he added.

“i wish i was on £38,000 per year, it is my choice to live in a council house, we have saved the council millions over the past few years and now they want to change our terms and conditions and have a 0.5% per rise this year thats less then 50pence per week a pint of milk costs you more than that, so some of the comments on here would be happy with this ? well i am sorry my members arnt happy with what is happening”

“Why is the OPE council house still tenanted by someone who can easily afford to buy somewhere with their £38K salary? A homeless family could do with that house. If I was on £38K, I would be living somewhere much more desirable than OPE.”

“I'm not amazed that the convenor can spell intransidence after all the council pay him £38,000 plus car he is better off than most officers and the people who live near him in his OPE Council House.”
