People were gathering at Hull's War Memorial today to celebrate the contributions made by deserving veterans from all sections of the Armed Forces.

The Lord Mayor of Hull was arriving at the event at about 10.45am, then attending a service, led by the Reverend Alan Bagshaw, to commemorate Veterans' Day.

Barry Medhurst, chairman of the Hull and District Council for Ex-servicemen and chairman of the Prince of Wales' Own Regimental Association, has played a huge part in organising the event.

He said: “I am really looking forward to this event, as are all the other members who are taking part.

“There is always a good turnout for these services and we hope that continues this year.

“Veterans' Day is very important to us and to the community, so it's nice to see the amount of support we get from the public.

There was to be a two-minute silence and wreaths laid at the memorial in Paragon Square.

On Sunday, the streets of the city will play host to the Council of Ex-servicemen's parade.

Members will gather in Guildhall Road, at the south side of Queens Garden, at noon before marching through the streets from 12.30pm, arriving in Kings Square for a service at 1pm.

After the service the participants will march towards the bottom of Parliament Street and proceed into Alfred Gelder Street.

Here they will march past the Lord Mayor and the commanding officer of the first battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Jackson, and they will take the salute.

The Veterans' Day commemorations will be rounded off with a gathering at the Trades and Labour Club in Beverley Road from about 3pm.
