HEADS were bowed, standards were lowered and fallen comrades

were remembered a Veterans' Day service in the city centre.

Paragon Square played host to former member's of the Armed

Forces as they came together at Hull's War Memorial in Paragon

Square.

Barry Medhurst, chairman of the Hull and District Council

for Ex-servicemen and chairman of the Prince of Wales' Own

Regimental Association, said the event was “an absolute”

success.

He said: “It was a well-turned event and I cannot ask for

more than that.

“We all had a great day and we took the time to reflect on

memories of fallen friends, but also to celebrate those who

came back after serving their countries in many different

theatres.

“It was an absolute success.”

The event was attended by the Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor

Elaine Garland, who also stayed for the service, led by the

Reverend Alan Bagshaw, to commemorate Veterans' Day.

There was a two-minute silence and wreaths laid at the

memorial, which comes as a precursor to a ceremony on Sunday

which will see the streets of the city host a parade by the

Council of Ex-servicemen.

Members will gather on Guildhall Road, at the south side of

Queens Gardens, at noon before marching through the streets

from 12.30pm.

Passing out of the college end of Guildhall Road the

procession will turn right into Lowgate and march down Lowgate

to Silver Street.

Turning right into Silver Street it will then weave its way

left into Trinity Lane, arriving in Kings Square for a service

at 1pm.

The service is expected to finish at about 2pm, and by

2.10pm the parade plans to make its way down Trinity House

Lane, into Whitefriargate and onto Parliament Street. Then into

Alfred Gelder Street.

The parade will march past the Lord Mayor and the commanding

officer of the first battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment,

Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Jackson.

They will take the salute.

A detachment from the first battalion will also be

attending.

The parade will turn left at the end of the Guildhall,

before finishing on Guildhall Road.

The event will be rounded off with a gathering at the Trades

and Labour Club, Beverley Road, from about 3pm.

“Totally agree. Why aren't these events given the publicity they deserve?”

“I totally agree with the comments made already on this story, this event should have been publicised every night for the passed week. I hope that every veteran who marches, no matter what age, colour or religon hold thier heads high as they deserve our respect as do the ones who are still serving, they are doing a sterling job under difficult conditions and they all deserve our thanks, also veterans day is also another day for them to get together and share their experiences with us all and to remember all those who have not come back or have died in the service of our country. No matter what your views on the present climate, we all should give them our praise.”
