THE winning police and crime commiss- ioner (PCC) should ensure they put victims of crime first, a charity has said.

Victim Support is urging all candidates for the role to support five pledges, which include asking the police to focus more on victims.

Merv Bishop, divisional manager for Victim Support in Humber and North Yorkshire, said: "Crime can, and does, wreck lives. Even what might be seen as relatively minor crimes can have a major and sometimes permanent effect on victims or witnesses.

"We believe that as well as directly helping people affected by crime, by putting victims first, the PCC can help to improve confidence in the police and the justice system as a whole.

"This can lead to more people coming forward to report crimes and more witnesses willing to testify."

A survey conducted by the charity found only one in five people believe a PCC will improve the help victims are offered.

“Spoke to Merv on Friday. He was a really nice bloke. We had exchanged a few emails but meeting in person was much better.”
