ENGLAND'S Rugby League coach Steve McNamara was one of almost 50 people to take part in a marathon rowing fundraiser at the weekend.

The former Hull FC star joined 48 others taking part in the 24-hour event to help raise funds to rebuild Hull University Boat Club's premises, which were burnt down in an arson attack in September.

Mr McNamara said: "It was really good and I enjoyed it.

"It's just nice to be able to help raise money for such a good cause and support local sport.

"I didn't feel too sore afterwards as I did a bit of training for it. It was a great effort by all."

Mr McNamara got involved because of his daughter Grace, 12.

He said: "My daughter is part of the Hull Rowing club and shares the facilities with the university, so I was very happy to get involved."

Organiser Shawn Boatin was delighted with the success of the event.

He said: "We do this every year but, this time round, everyone was really up for it because we had such a good cause.

"We are delighted Steve McNamara got involved.

"It was strange seeing him at a student house taking part. We thought he might to ten or 20 min- utes but he did the full hour."

Now the money has been raised, the next step is to carry out the work.

Mr Boatin said: "We will use the money to buy the materials and then carry out the work ourselves, which should happen in the summer.

"We will try to get as many people involved as possible to help out."
