“The container on this vehicle was bound for DHL at whitwood as far as I am led to believe and contained a load that would have been highly unlikely to have shifted during the sea crossing or to have made the container unstable on the back of the trailer. This distinctive volvo has passed me several times on hedon road at speeds well in excess of the 40mph i was travelling at and on other occasions the same vehicle has cut me up on the hedon road roundabouts by overtaking whilst negotiating the roundabout and straying over the line into the left hand lane. Knowing the driver should not determine any alternative opinion of fact. This very same distinctive orange FH12 has also caused damage to two trailers earlier in the week by the driver backing into them whilst attempting to reverse. “"This roundabout isn't a particularly poorly designed one like the one near the prison, so the road isn't really a factor in this case.
At the end of the day, the driver was going too fast for that particular vehicle / load, but even so, would have been well under that roads 40mph speed limit.
I have done a lot of container work (which is what this truck was doing) and I know full well, when you collect a container like the blue one on the back of this lorry, that you have no real idea what exactly is in the back nor if it has been loaded with any regards to stability by who ever loaded it in China or Vietnam or wherever.
The driver should be aware of this however, and be EXTRA cautious at bends & roundabouts!
Taking it easy will only add a few extra seconds onto your journey. Let's be careful out there!"”

“swhitwell, "the lorry was overturned by the container" now i don't think that comment was meant to be funny, but trust me it was, and i dare say it made a few readers on here chuckle.
You say you know the driver? judging by your comments i get the impression your either a close freind? or a relative? maybe his wife? Anyway your defence of him is admirable and understandable. I sincerely hope he fully recovers soon.
Unfortunately i don't think the people from VOSA will have anything other than bad news for the driver. If as you say "the load moved,or became unstable" they will simply come to the conclusion that the load moved because the driver was going too fast. The simple fact is, however painfull this is to you, not one container has ever turned over on a roundabout because the driver was going too slow. Even the best driver can make a mistake and if his boss has even the slightest compassion, the driver will have a job to go back to when he recovers.
Hope so anyway.”

“Leaving the Samskip terminal is a left hander, go past the coal terminal to a slow left hander to the tight right roundabout then towards the left hander somerdon road / hedon road roundabout then to marfleet roundabout, by now driver confidence and complacency has built up along with speed and judging by the position of the steering axle he tried in vain to stop it flipping but was too slow in reaction time to prevent the inevitable.
Unlike the prison roundabout were there is a nasty adverse camber and has been the scene of many accidents caused by excessive speed caused by driver error..this roundabout has a neutral camber. I.e flat.
I have 27 years experience of Hgv/lgv experience with a few accidents and near misses along the way, thankfully none as serious as this, but on every every occasion it was was caused by driver error.....me ... Not mechanical, not load related, not other people, me, my fault 100% of the time !!
If the driver had been travelling at an appropriate speed according to the prevailing conditions then this accident would not have occurred
Can you honestly say you have never had an accident or near miss and it was not your fault.. I've yet to meet a driver who can say that...”

“You were there in the lorry with the driver then were you "canuliftit"????????
I hope you never have an accident, oh but you won't will you because accidents are always the drivers fault!!! When you have the facts about this incident then please comment. Until then keep your thoughts to yourself!!!”

“All accidents including this one are caused by driver error..in this case excessive speed caused by driver error is to blame.”

“this road should not have roundabouts on, how many more accidents are we going to hear about how many more killed? due to roundabouts and lorries, wether driver in wrong or not this should be a straight road from hedon right up to M62 out of hull.... containing less accidents and road closures, this is a busy stretch of road both ways.”

“I know the driver of the lorry and I can tell you ALL that he was NOT going at speed!!! He is a very experienced HGV driver for many years and the lorry was over turned by the container! Whether its internal load had become unstable or moved we will never know. This container had been brought into the country onto Hull docks and who knows who loaded it and where!!
Can I also say that he was not drunk, tired, or not paying attention. He has never had an accident in a lorry before and I would be willing to travel with him on a daily basis if I wasn't working myself.
He was actually injured and was dealt with very well at A&E at HRI, thanks to the staff there. He may need to have an operation. In no way would he have put himself, or others at risk by being careless behind the wheel of such a dangerous vehicle.
Please consider your comments before posting them, unless you were there, understand the situation do not pass judgment. This guy is likely to lose his job as he can't work now for a while, and that means another family in financial crisis and another person on the dole!
It's not always about SPEED!!!”

“I notice that most of the overturned HGV's on hedon road are containers. Hmmm let me think for a minute that if perhaps the companies operating containers allowed the drivers to take their legally mandatory breaks from driving instead of expecting them to put their tachograph on break whilst they are in the container unloading it then the drivers may actually be less fatigued. No this won't happen because money talks louder than drivers welfare to these cowboy operators. VOSA need to have a bigger prescence around the docks in Hull especially at the container terminal and start looking at how much other work is showing on these fools tachograph records in comparison with always showing breaks.”

“Too much speed, not enough skill. All HGV drivers should be made to carry one of their family in the cab, then see how safe they would drive!”
