The two attackers then turned on the 25-year-old man, punching him to the ground and stamping on his head.

The suspects ran off along Jameson Street and are believed to have eventually headed on to Holderness Road.

They are said to have had very distinctive "full-sleeve" tattoos on their right arms.

The first suspect is a white, muscular man in his late teens or early 20s. He was wearing a short-sleeved black shirt, black trousers or jeans and black shoes. He had short, dark hair shaved shorter at the back and sides.

The second suspect is a white, slim man, also in his late teens or early 20s. He had short, dark hair, and was wearing a grey, short-sleeved top with a white collar, dark blue jeans and light-coloured espadrilles with darker colour around the laces.

DC Matt Dickinson said: “This was a particularly vicious attack that was unprovoked and the victim was lucky not to have sustained more serious injuries.

“I am sure someone will recognise the two people in the CCTV and I would urge them to come forward.”

Detectives also want to locate the man who made off when the 25-year-old man intervened. He is described as a white man with dark hair and glasses.

Call 101, quoting log 72 of August 27.

“If only there were Police loitering around with nothing to do...

The government have made it worse with all the cuts... Soon they'll rely on volunteers and vigilantes... As gradually we slip to third world country status where the savages run amock!!!”

“Sickening. Looked as if they were congratulating each other at 20 seconds in.

I'm assuming they are working to be able to afford a night out or my tax is paying for them? Either way, sack them from their jobs, stop their benefits and jail them each for ten years.

    Make an example of them.

But let's get real. They'll probably have to pay £50 compensation and do two weeks gardening for their trouble.”

“How come the CCTV images of "crime " are always so poor, yet I got a nice letter from mayor Boris for straying into a bus lane in London complete with photo showing my car number plate in FULL COLOUR and totally fantastic clarity. (Complete with £130 fine- reduced to £65 if paid in 14 days.)”

    “@dontwo
"We see a lot of CCTV videos of assaults in our city centre after the event, but that just shows there is not enough police on duty whilst these things are happening.
This one happened in the very heart of our city centre for Gods sake, not a dark little alley."

I don't go into town drinking often. I actively try and avoid it unless invited to a good friends birthday bash. You can do without the hassle. I am only 32 so not a total grumpy old git yet, but..
Last month a few friends and I went out and found ourselves drinking around Trinity House Lane. We could not believe the heavy Police presence to the degree that I went and asked a Street warden (pretend police) if there had been a football match on that night.
He said this was the norm these days. I was quite horrified and asked if the trouble was that bad to warrant this degree of supervision and he said it was better now because of the police presence as it acted as a deterrent.

They might not have been at that very spot, this assault lasting seconds took place, but please do not believe that the police are not out there.”

“Bazzahull. Two cowards attack a good samaritan, they was probably full of drink and drugs
when they go to court they will put their suits on and stand there like two frightened girls and plead it was all a big mistake and their very sorry and they are really nice guys.Of course the idiot of a magistrate will believe them and they will get a slap on the wrist. The best scenario is for the victim to mark their card and get them by themselves and then you might see a proper fight, Barring that it should not take you long enough to get yourself in a fight.”
