Volunteer gets overseas placement to help needy in Nigeria

HER passion is to help those less fortunate than herself.

Now, Zoe Higgins, 23, has had her wish granted after being accepted on to a volunteering scheme fighting poverty in developing countries.

Zoe, of Anlaby, is one of the first people from the city to be accepted to the Voluntary Service Overseas.

After passing a series of assessments, she was told this week she will be travelling to Nigeria on February 5.

She said: "I have always had a need to help people and give something back.

"What I do over the three months will not only affect the children in those countries, but also back in the UK as I will be used by the organisation to put my skills to use here to give something back to the UK."

Zoe sent her application and thought nothing more of it.

She was then contacted by the organisation and asked to take an online assessment.

Passing that, she went to London last week for a further day of assessments.

She said: "I got an email on Tuesday saying I had been successful.

"I could be doing anything from HIV awareness, building huts and helping children who have lost parents or abandoned, by giving them social skills and the chance to learn about other cultures."

To be able to take up her place, Zoe needs to raise £800 for the charity and is appealing to people for donations so she can go and help with disadvantaged youngsters in developing countries.

She said: "This money is not to fund my travel – all that has been paid for. The money I need to raise is to go towards helping others."

Her employer, KC, has allowed her to go on the three-month trip and return to her job after her voluntary work is complete.
