Walters named Pub Of The Year
A HULL pub named after an 1820s barber's shop has scoped a top award for its beer.
Walters, the former Venn bar and brasserie, has been named Hull Pub Of The Year by the Hull and East Yorkshire Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).

Accolades have been handed out for the best pubs in 2009.
Walters, in Scale Lane, takes its name from a barber's shop in the same premises in the 1820s and has been open for just two years.
Run by Alan Murphy and his girlfriend Chrissy Fleming, it is described by Camra as a "haven" in an area of the Old Town "over-populated by fashion bars".
Responding to the accolade, Mr Murphy said: "We are over the moon with the award because it is given by an organisation that really knows what it is talking about.
"Many people associate cask ale with spit and sawdust pubs, a lot of old drunks in a dark and dingy bar and dirty toilets.
"Our aim with Walters is to bring real ale to a different, younger market in a contemporary environment."
He added: "At least 50 per cent of our clientele are people you wouldn't expect to be drinking cask ale."
The winner of the Village Pub Of The Year for the second year running is the Plough Inn in Hollym, near Withernsea.

“CAMRA members voted for their Kingston upon Hull Pub of the Year 2009 after carefully considering the following criteria: Community Focus, Atmosphere, Campaigning, Quality of Real Ale, Style/Decor, Service and Welcome and Value for Money.
For the pub to be eligible for the competition the licensee had to be present since the 1st January 2009 (which ruled out pubs like the Black Boy).
The George Hotel, situated in the Land of Green Ginger, was runner-up in the 2009 competition. The pub is owned by Enterprise Inns and is run by Dean Kirk and Paul Crosskill
Both pubs have not only shown a high consistency of standards over the last twelve months, but also over the last two years, as they were both also nominated for the 2008 title.
The Hop & Vine in Albion Street, the Three John Scotts in Lowgate, and the Wellington Inn in Russell Street (Kingston upon Hull POTY 2008) were the other pubs nominated for the title.

“The Wellington Inn is clearly the superior hostelry but Walters isn't doing a bad job.”

“CAMRA "Pub of the Year" and this accolade means precisely what?
To me it means that a lot of Beer enthusiasts whom think they know more about pubs than anyone else can say that this pub is the best in Hull. I have had experience of CAMRA and it got to the point that i asked for me to be removed from the Good beer guide, as i was sick and tired of camra members coming in and saying my "beer wasn't quite right" This award should be taken with a pinch of salt. The fact is that camra have a really good PR machine and get this into all local papers when pubs are awarded this title. In my opinion The Black Boy is a far better pub.As is the Blue Bell”
