CYCLISTS are being warned to be on their guard after three separate reports of assaults.

Over the weekend, two cyclists reported being grabbed by the front seat passenger of a passing vehicle in the Southcoates Lane area and another was pushed off her bike by a car passenger on Staveley Road.

In the first report, a cyclist was riding over the Southcoates Lane bridge in the direction of HM Prison, Hull, on Saturday (November 10) at 7am. A dark coloured vehicle, believed to be an old style Vauxhall Astra, is reported to have driven alongside the cyclist when a front seat passenger took hold of the cyclist’s arm pulling him towards the vehicle. The cyclist was fortunately unhurt and did not fall from the cycle in the incident, but was shaken and alarmed.

On Sunday, also on Southcoates Lane, another cyclist reported being grabbed by someone in a dark coloured old style Vauxhall Astra at 8.20am.

Another similar report was made to police after a woman cycling to work at 5.15am on Sunday (November 11) on Staveley Road, just before Wingfield Road, was pushed off her bike by a passenger in a Vauxhall Astra.

It is believed a woman dog walker may have witnessed the assault on Staveley Road and police are keen to hear from her to obtain any further information she may have. A passing driver of a 4x4 vehicle also stopped to come to the aid of the woman cyclist and police would appeal to that person to also come forward with any information.

No serious injury was caused to any of the cyclists but these incidents could have had a much worse outcome and roads policing officers are increasing their patrols in the area in response.

The vehicle is thought to have carried two men and whilst there are no descriptions of their appearance they are thought to be local men as they were heard to speak in a local accent.

Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Humberside Police on the non emergency number 101 quoting log numbers 195 of 10 November 2012 and log numbers 185 and 209 of 11 November 2012.

“Surely they must have been caught on one of the many cameras driving to or from the incident.
Cycling on the roads has enough dangers without idiots like these adding to them.

Hopefully they will be caught and the magistrates will make an example of them.”

“An easily accessible hammer taped to the crossbar can provide a viable deterrent.

@Mark_Hull_65: "Hopefully they'll be charged with attempted murder."

Absolutely not a chance, if they are caught. Any motor-related charges are inevitably watered-down in favour of the motorist by specialist lawyers.”

“Sunday was 11th... not 10th as article states.

As for these incidents... I suspect that they were one offs committed by inane idiots on that Saturday night / Sunday morning. However, once we can establish the exact car (there have been an awful lot of previous shaped Astras) do we know anyone with a Defender to teach these toe rags a lesson???? (If only!)”
