GOALS from on-loan pair David Meyler and Robbie Brady earned Hull City a 2-1 victory at promotion rivals Watford, a win that fired the Tigers up to fourth in the Championship.

Meyler celebrated his first goal in English football when heading in a loose ball four minutes before half-time, before Brady's wonderful free-kick doubled City's advantage midway through the second period.

Watford finally responded in stoppage time when Troy Deeney beat David Stockdale to a through-ball but it was too little too late for the in-form hosts.

City's spirited victory made it three consecutive away wins for Steve Bruce's men and dragged them to within three points of the automatic promotion places.

For all Watford's buoyancy after a run of seven games unbeaten, it was City who looked every inch the genuine promotion contender throughout a bright first half.

The first chance of the game fell to Jay Simpson, who had been recalled at the expense of Aaron Mclean, but from Robert Koren's low cross, goalkeeper Manuel Almunia was brave to block at the striker's feet.

Koren had a shot of his own, when teed up by Simpson, straight at Almunia, while Brady also spurned a decent opportunity when volleying Ahmed Elmohamady's cross over the bar with his left foot, when using his right would have been the better option.

Not everything was going City's way, however. The in-form Paul McShane succumbed to injury after 27 minutes of the game, but an able deputy was found in substitute Jack Hobbs, who made his comeback eight months after knee surgery.

A lack of penetration from Watford allowed City to sit comfortably for long periods and the visitors got their reward for a confident performance four minutes before half-time.

The adventurous Corry Evans was unfortunate to see his thumping drive cannon off  the underside of the bar, but Meyler was there to profit from the rebound when calmly heading into an unguarded net.

If Watford had disappointed the patrons of Vicarage Road with an unconvincing first half performance, a bold response after the break offered real hope of a route back into the game.

Mark Yeates' free-kick was well saved by Stockdale but City had to rely on a slice of good fortune with a quarter of the game remaining.

Substitute Almen Abdi, who had only been on the field for two minutes, latched on to Yeates' low cross and sent his shot powerfully against the post.

Much to Bruce's relief, it proved to be as close as Watford would get to parity. Five minutes after City's let-off, the visitors doubled their lead.

A central free-kick 25 yards out from goal was seized by Brady and his left-foot effort was too good for Almunia.

Watford continued to press in search of a lifeline but gallant defending from the Tigers formed an insurmountable barrier. Elmohamady's clearance off the line typified an excellent defensive effort.

Deeney's stoppage time consolation, when he beat Stockdale to the ball, came too late and City were able to hold on to another precious away win ahead of facing Huddersfield at the KC Stadium next weekend.

“I headed to Watford expecting two good footballing teams and a goal fest. Watford shocked me how average they were given their goal record and league position. In the opening minutes they did look a lively team but the tigers 11 soon found their feet. Our patient passing play frustrated the hornets and tired them out. Forcing them onto the back foot time and time again. Myler n Evans are excellent in the holding role. They might lack creativity but with elmohamady, koren n aluko that does not matter. It was one of them games at 0-0 that was nail biting. It was total football from city with the home team rarely having a sniff. The back 3 looked confident with stockdale behind and Bruce sent several defensive clearance out wide to elmohamady n Simpson on the counter. It from such a wide attack that saw city attacking the Watford box. Their defense was just as steady but when the ball broke back from a city shot and bounce kindly for Myler there was only one outcome, 1-0 city. It was all that they had deserved. Second half city were not as direct and thing evened out a bit, though Watford rarely offered little. Even fat yeates who always scores against us was quiet. It was a pleasure to see jack Hobbs back, this can only bode well for city's promotion push. The only thing for city from my eyes was the lack of cutting edge up front. Simpsons work rate has improved but his finishing and composure remain poor. We deffo need to address this and left back in January, but Steve n allam will know this. City continued to push n probe and it was a delightful cheeky free kick from a previous quiet Robby bradie that saw city go 2-0 up. It looked like it had hit the bar but it nestled into the goal, 2-0. Importantly Hobbs slotted in like he had not missed 8 months, stockdale looks class with each game. Elmo made a strange gesture late on though to the fans, is he heading back to the stadium of light?? 12,300+ was the crowd, very poor Watford given your recent run and goals, all in a well earned and hard worked for 3 points. We really are pushing the top 2 now. Hudds n Derby are good teams but hull r confident and Bruce is a master tactician, 6 points for those 2 and we will deffo be ion the automatic spots for sure. I would like to see Nick p get a go now, he would even if not scoring, hold the ball up from our many attacks to allow city to get forward. ratings from me, stockdale 7, Bruce 8, Chester 7, Mc'Shane 7, (Hobbs 6,) elmohamady 6.5, Brady 7, Myler 8, Evans 7, koren 6, Quinn 7.5, Simpson 6, (nick p 6.5, rosie 6)”

“I think in fairness to McShane it wasn't silly mistakes every game, it was lack of a regular run that was killing his confidence, he was awesome again until his injury. Macca, hobbs n Chester if we have to stick to this 351”

“I think Steve Bruce deserves enormous credit for his team selection and is substitutions. The work he has done with McShane to improve his game is there to be seen at every match. Bruce has cut out the silly mistakes that McShane made at almost every match. And Bruce's work with Corry Evans is a revelation. Under Pearson and Barmby I didn't rate Evans, he spent most of his time passing backward or sideways, he used to rarely pass forward and move the game on. Since Bruce has arrived he is a different player. Full of energy and some fantastic forward passes. Steve Bruce will take City to the Premiership I am sure.”

“So proud of the lads yesterday, we really do have the makings of a very very good side. It's been said before but we really do have a far better side than 2008 but the division is far stronger and I think this team would have won the league in 2008. We are getting better as the season goes on, and 1 or maybe 2 astute signings in January, and Automatic promotion is becoming a strong reality .
    C'mon u Ull”

“It says in the tigers own Match report 883 city fans... It looked a lot more than that in the middle of the crowd.
Watford will do well to maintain their place in the league. It must be kind of dispiriting for the team when all their supporters are leaving so long before the end of the game.
But anyway city were magnificent . That was a really good all round performance, and great to see Hobbs back and looking strong.
Evans was the MOTM for me again. He works and works and works again. With such a busy set of mid fielders out there we are making it difficult for other teams. The formation looked liken 3 6 1 most of the time. I think Barcelona might be trying to play like us you know.”
