Welwick mourns loss of Bernard Blashill
A long-serving parish councillor and charity fundraiser has died after he was hit by a car in his village.
Bernard Blashill, who was affectionately as the "Welwick Relic", was fatally injured as he got out his car to visit a friend on Friday afternoon.
His wife Mary was in the passenger seat at the time.
Mr Blashill was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary, but sadly died.
The 82-year-old was a parish councillor in Welwick, near Withernsea, for more than 45 years and raised thousands of pounds for charity through fundraising events.
Fellow parish councillor Mick Wilkin said: "He was known as the Welwick Relic. He was the local character.
"If you wanted to know anything, you went to see Bernard.
"His death has knocked everybody in the village sideways."
Retired farmer Mr Blashill devoted much of his time organising events to raise money for local charities, such as Dove House Hospice and his village church, St Mary's.
The biggest of these was the annual Heritage Weekend, at his home on Moat Farm.
The exhibition of steam engines, threshing machines, tractors and vintage cars drew visitors from far and wide.
He also helped to run The Welwick Two Wheelers Bike Ride to Kilnsea every Easter, attracting up to 250 cyclists.
His wife has reportedly given her blessing for the event to continue as planned this year.
Mr Blashill picked up the name of the "Welwick Relic" because of his collection of vintage tractors.
He could often be found at auction houses across the region.
In 2007, Mr Blashill picked up an East Riding Council Chairman's Award for his tireless contribution to the community.
The accident happened on North Lane, Welwick, at about 3.05pm.
Mr Blashill is believed to have got out of his black Land Rover when an accident occurred involving a red Toyota Startlet and a red Fiat Ulysse.
It is understood Mr Blashill was then hit by one of the cars.
The drivers of the two cars were not injured.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.

“Bernard and Mary have been our neighbours for 25 years. On the first day we were welcomed and assured that they would help out if there was anything we needed. They lived up to that promise and we have been blessed with the best neighbours anyone could ever wish for. May Mary's memories of a fine husband comfort her. R.I.P. Bernard”
