HULL City fans were united in their praise for legendary striker Dean Windass as they wished him well in his move to Oldham.

Deano - who will forever be remembered for firing the Tigers into the Premier League for the first time in the club's history - has signed a six-month loan deal with Oldham.

The deal is likely to become permanent and Deano only had six-months remaining on his City contract anyway, meaning the 39-year-old has effectively played his last game for the club.

Many supporters rate his strike in the play-off final against Bristol City at Wembley as their greatest memories in football.

Deano, who began his career at North Ferriby, has always been a firm fans favourite, but that goal secured his legendary status.

He will go down in history as one of the finest servants the club has ever had.

Peter Lincoln, chairman of the Hull City Official Supporters Club, said: "I think we would all want to wish him the very best of luck and hope that he does well for Oldham.

"He has been a massive player for us, especially over the last couple of years.

"He became a legend at City."

Andrew Jennings, from the Irish branch of the Hull City Supporters Club, said: "It's been great for people over here to have someone like Deano playing for the club.

"Everyone knows him because he is such a character and they associate the club with him."

Alex Duke, 54, of Cottingham, who knew Deano when he was a teenage labourer, said: "He's a loyal servant.

"This won't be the end of him. We will see him back here, probably as a coach.

"He will never ever be forgotten."

Ninety-year-old Cyril Metcalf, who has been watching City for 80 years, said: "I watched Dean ever since he came to Hull from North Ferriby.

"I think he was struggling in the Premier League - the pace is too much for him.

"If I was a lower league chairman I would be looking to snap him up - I think he can still do a job down there and score goals."

“I am very sorry that Deano is leaving. He should realise that he is at the end of an illustrious career. He is an icon and a talisman for Hull City. Whilst he is still keen to play the game he should realise that he has very little time left. It is a time for him to go into player coaching or player management with a non league team to get experience for the next phase of his life. Dean Windass is a winner he will be a winner in management if he improves his judgement which in this case is very wrong.”
