DEAN Windass has officially retired as a professional footballer.

The Hull City legend , 40, has ended an 18-year playing career in order to focus on completing his UEFA coaching badges.

Windass, whose memorable winning goal in the play-off final against Bristol City in 2008 lifted the Tigers into the Premier League for the first time, said: "It has always been my intention to get into coaching and management and while I understood how difficult that maybe, I was happy to get some experience at the earliest opportunity at Darlington working under someone as knowledgeable as Colin Todd.

"I was also happy to continue playing and combine our tactical aims with the added impetus of being on the pitch.

"As far as playing is concerned you are a long time retired, but I can honestly say now that I want to channel all my enthusiasm into coaching and ultimately management."

Windass, who also played for Aberdeen, Oxford, Bradford, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United, played his last league game as player/coach for Darlington in their 2-0 home defeat by Bournemouth in September.

He and Todd were sacked and replaced by Steve Staunton and Kevin Richardson shortly after.

    “STEVE!

Sounds like you're the one in cloud cuckoo land. Brown got us up, and kept us up without being given the money that lots of other clubs have had. Yes we were awful last night, and yes Brown has to take some responsibility for that, but he's had his best player sold from under him, and hasn't had the backing to bring in the quality of player that we need. FC, Zamora, etc all came to talks, and in football only one thing talks loud and that's money. I don't think the best manager in the world could do much more, and if you look at clubs that got rid of the manager who takes them into the top division most are now Championship, and L1 teams. Teams who kept their managers are the ones that bounce back. Even if we go down Brown will be the Man to bring us back up, and the short sighted fan will be calling him "the best manager in the World" AGAIN!!!”

“I have just come off KCFM and the club liasion officer is another one who lives in cloud cuckoo land.
How can we keep a manager who has won 2 in 30???? ( Doesnt happen) but the reason why.. Because he has a unhealthy relationship with a clown of a chairman who will never sack him. Why do we get the season ticket for 2010 today, because Duffen wants to see what he is going to raise because he WANTS to sell this club.
Back to football, well what football you may add.
NO SHOT ON TARGET IN 94 MINUTES. no passion, Bullard and Geo the only half decent players we have with skill,
    no confidence, infact no nothing!!!!
We are so very very weak, other teams can see it a mile off..
BROWN WILL NEVER ATTRACT ANY PLAYERS BECAUSE ALL PLAYERS KNOW HE IS A PRATT...
I would rather go down with a bit of dignity and playing a bit more entertaining than watch this dross. Yes admit it , it was dross.
Cmon brownie if you care for this club RESIGN, if I was pulling my company down I would wrap my hand in, why dont you.
Yes i appreciate all you did but I am starting to dislike you more than my mother in law and thats when enough is enough..
    GUTTED, UTTER GUTTED”

“I never come on here to moan, but tonights performance was the must gutless, useless, shambolic performance I have seen for many a year. Just to give my player ratings out of ten:
Myhill 7, All the other rubbish 0, including subs.
I can accept playing rubbish, but I can't accept no spirit and pride in the shirt.
    Garbish Brownie, get it sorted.”
