The Bridlington woman was driving a blue Peugeot 206 and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a silver Vauxhall Astra, being driven in the same direction by a 20-year-old woman, was also involved in the accident.

A police spokeswoman said: "The two cars were apparently overtaking a blue and white Daf rigid truck, also travelling north, when the two cars were in collision.

"The Peugeot then collided with a tree."

The road was closed in both directions. It reopened shortly after 3pm.

Officers are trying to trace two motorists who stopped at the scene of the accident for a time but left before police arrived.

Witnesses are asked to call police on 101, quoting log 109 of February 18.

“The road in question is like many roads in our region, often filled with pot holes. Apart from that I dont consider it a problematic route. Driven according to the conditions of the day causes no extra major risks. This is a tragic accident and accidents will always happen in life. My thoughts are with her poor family and friends on this sad occasion.”

“Mildred. If there where a few people at the scene, you could offer no help or evidence, you had children in your car, the best thing you can do is leave the scene instead of rubber necking. Can you see that there are often reasons for leaving the scene of an incident and not just the one you have assumed applies”

“To the people who have red arrowed my comment - clearly you are as much of a disgrace to human-kind as the motorists that couldn't be bothered to hang about. Shocking... truly shocking.”

What?! A fatal accident; people stopped but left before any emergency services arrived???? It's like the Biblical Good Samaritan story...”

“Sezby i dont need you to edit my post! I stand by what i said, at the time when this story first appeared no one including me knew what had happened, but what i do know is that this road is not fit for purpose for any kind of driver. Its probably in terms of condition the worst road in the east riding. There are plenty of looney drivers on the roads that does not mean the roads should be left in such a disgraceful state!”

“I've edited Ferretmonger's post so that it makes sense... "How many people will have to die or be seriously injured before the drivers do something about their driving? There is a major accident on this road nearly every month! Do something drivers and adapt your driving to the conditions. Sympathy to the family."”
