SHE once referred to herself as being "just an average housewife".

But Frances Brady combined the roles of wife and mother with the demands of being one of the first female councillors to make a name for herself in the previously male- dominated world of local politics at the Guildhall in Hull.

Born in Hull, her mother died in childbirth when she was five and her father died 16 weeks later.

Brought up by an aunt, she served in the Women's Voluntary Service during the Second World War and was early member of the Labour Women's Movement in the city.
