Work to start on River Hull Bridge
CONSTRUCTION work on a spectacular new £6.6m footbridge across the River Hull will get underway next week.
When completed it will be capable of carrying 1,000 people as it opens to river traffic in what is already being billed as a ride with a difference.

With initial piling work about to start, regeneration officials say part of Hull's Old Town is set to be transformed by the ambitious project.

As well as the bridge itself, an ancient alleyway leading to the west bank landing is also due to undergo a £600,000 makeover.
Scale Lane Staith will become the main pedestrian approach route to the bridge.
Tim Wrigglesworth, senior development manager at city economy company Hull Forward, said: "The start of piling work is a significant milestone because it means there will be activity on the site.
"Although the main sections of the bridge are not due to be lifted into place until May next year, people will soon be able to follow physical progress on the site when the contractors arrive."
A dredger has spent the last fortnight clearing silt in the river to allow for a pontoon to be installed for the piling work.
Thee approach to the new bridge will be raised to create a gentle upward slope towards the landing area.
Shaped like a giant flipper from a pinball machine, the bridge has been designed by award-winning architecture firm McDowell and Benedetti.
As well as being able to carry passengers as it moves, the bridge will also include space for a small restaurant or cafe.
Sections of the bridge are currently being assembled by a specialist manufacturer in Barnsley.
It is scheduled to open to the public in July next year.
An information event featuring details of the scheme is being held at Nellie's pub in High Street on Thursday between 3pm and 7pm.

“Scott street bridge was closed and forgotten almost twenty years ago just left to decay in
an upright position , this well used river crossing should have been replaced with a new bridge years ago, a forward thinking council would have had plans in place for a new road network in this area along with other development plans that would attract investment and create new jobs . people who work in the bankside /scott st area have been denied reasonable access for far to long not even a temporary footbridge or cycle crossing has been put in place how much longer does the council need to address this. Replacing the old Scott street bridge should have been the main priority not the museum area.”

“The money should be spent on a bridge, but on one that crosses over near the marina and do away with pedestrian lights. A permanent structure there would be of particular benefit when clipper races come to town. The reason being, Hull will be grid locked as traffic will be diverted from there to make it safe for pedestrians. Why doesn't HCC plan ahead now for the next big water fest and prevent traffic mayhem.”
