They may only represent a mere 3-5 percent of the poker field, but women were at the forefront of this year’s World Series of Poker.

Jackie Glazier, an Australian poker pro, recognised the increasing power of the female players; a force to be reckoned with at the tables. Following her $457,776 cash, which secured her a second place finish in the $3,000 NLHE event at the WSOP, Jackie said: "It's the first year that women are consistently going deep, showing that it's not just a men's game. Now that more women are doing well, it has a snowball effect, more women see others succeeding and they say, "I want to get to that level--I want to get better."

Often unrepresented, the focus at the tables tends to be on the male players, but more and more often women are stealing the titles and attracting crowds and the media. We only have to look at our own PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst, one of the most successful players of 2012 so far.

With an impressive total cash of $534,675 from the five events, Selbst remained strong at the top of the money leaders in the WSOP main event and even secured herself a renowned gold bracelet in the $2,500 10-Game event. Her closest contender was Joe Cada, who won the WSOP main event back in 2009, this time he was not so lucky; coming in at a $100,000 less than Selbst.

Female Pros Selbst ($88,070) and Boeree ($19,227) were ranked highly across the seven main event cashes. Reinforcing girl power was Vicky Coren who cashed for an attractive $26,414, setting her in third place in the $1,500 NLHE event. Not one to let the side down, Marquez followed, cashing for $15,008 in the $5,000 NLHE. These figures, added together with female force made an incredible $610,032; which is over twenty percent of the overall Team Pro cash winnings, which stood at $2,814,718 at the end of the series. Not bad for four female players, not bad at all.
