HULL: Councillors have called for action to be taken against rogue traders selling cars on roads and lay-bys in the city.

The practice has become widespread on main routes across Hull in recent months.

Untaxed vehicles risk being seized and even crushed by the council and the police using existing powers.

But enforcement is more limited for vehicles with valid tax discs that are parked legally.

Councillors on the city's environment and transport scrutiny commission said there was a difference bet- ween a rogue trader effectively running a second-hand car business on the public highway and an individual selling their car outside their house.

Councillor Pete Allen said: "The problem we have is that these people think we are not going to do anything about it.We need to do something to show them we mean business."
