Comedians bid to pursue Fringe dream

07:00 - 14-May-2008

LOOKING forward to their debut at the Edinburgh Festival is no laughing matter for a Hull-based comedy group

For five-piece outfit Scarlet Lights are facing an uphill struggle to raise funds to cover the cost of their three-week stint in the Scottish capital after having an Arts Lottery bid turned down.

The all-female act had pinned their hopes on securing Lottery backing.

But now they are on a major do-it-yourself fundraising drive instead.

Events from benefit gigs to a sponsored clairvoyance night are being lined up over the next few weeks to help cover the expected £6,000 cost of performing at the festival.

“We are looking at all possible funding options down to running our own car boot stall,” said group member Kerrie Marsh.

“Getting an invitation to perform at the festival is a dream come true for us and we had hoped to get an Arts Lottery grant to help us with the cost of living while we are up there.

“Unfortunately, after a lot of paperwork and a lot of sleepless nights, we've been told our application has been unsuccessful.

“As a result, we have decided if we want to want to get there we are going to have to fund it ourselves.

“Although we are part of the free fringe and as such have the offer of a free venue, the five of us still have to afford travel, accommodation, programme entry, posters, flyers and other promotion as well as the cost of living for three weeks.”

The group originally met as students at the University of Hull and have remained in the city working in a variety of arts and drama jobs.

In Edinburgh they plan to showcase their self-penned satirical show Sheaility.

“It's a comedy sketch show based around the female psyche,” explained Kerrie.

“We want to go to the festival and represent Hull to show people there is a talented, creative and vibrant side to the city.”

The next fundraising event is a clairvoyance evening and gig by Scarlet Lights at the Dee Street Club, Hessle Road, west Hull, on May 29. Anyone interested in sponsoring the girls should call 07786 95470.
