Quirky shows for new year
Audiences will be transported around the world and beyond thanks to a series of weird and wacky theatrical performances scheduled to play at Ropery Hall, at The Ropewalk, Barton-Upon-Humber, in 2010.
The small community venue, which seats 120 people, creates an intimate setting for its quirky choice of shows for the new year.
On Friday, January, 15, poet John Hegley will be walking through the Ropery Hall doors. The Londoner made his first ever performance money by busking outside a Hull shoe shop in the 70s.
Nowadays, he's an Edinburgh Festival regular and is coming back to the Humber area to deliver a mix of poetry, music and idiosyncratic tales.
Following this, from Thursday, January 28 to Saturday, January 30, Ropery Hall will be home to Flight Of The Panto, a pantomime with an unusual twist which takes the audience on a journey into space.
On Friday, February, 19, North Country Theatre will bring a sense of adventure to Barton as they recreate the epic 10th century Egil's Saga in the short play Egil Skallagrimson Keeps His Head. The play follows Egil as he and his Icelandic crew are storm-driven up the Humber, resulting in a multitude of unforeseen trouble.
For any fans of Anthony Trollope, Edward Fox's one-man show, An Evening With Anthony Trollope on Friday, March 12, is a must-see.
Fox gives a dramatic insight into the prolific author's works, portraying Trollope through extracts from his novels, as well as his autobiography.
A little further into the year, on Friday, March 19, The Ropewalk presents 2010: A Space Oddity, an eccentric theatrical performance which pulls the audience into a world of sci-fi, cult movies, and spoof.
For a dose of fun aimed more at the children, Theatre of Widdershins' Arabian Nights show comes to Ropery Hall on Tuesday, April 6, and uses props, puppets and storytelling to entertain younger theatre-goers.
