PRIVATE Kallum Stone proudly poses for his first photo in an Army uniform, honouring his big brother, who was killed in Afghanistan last summer.

Kallum, 18, of Atwick, near Hornsea, has followed in his brother Gregg's footsteps and joined up, with the blessing of his parents, Bob and Angie.

Hero Gregg, 20, of 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment (3 Yorks) was shot dead in Helmand Province last June, while rescuing a senior Afghan policeman kidnapped by the Taliban.

According to Bob, Kallum, who is now in week two of a gruelling, 26-week course at Infantry Training Centre, Catterick in North Yorkshire, is in high spirits.

He said: "Kallum seems to be enjoying it.

"He knew what to expect from what Gregg had told him about basic training but it has still come as a bit of a culture shock.

"Mobile phones have been taken off them and they're leaning the basics."

Army staff have told the family there is chance, although slim given the planned withdrawal of British combat forces next year, he might be sent to Afghanistan.

Bob said: "Kallum is a little homesick but that's natural and the training staff are used to dealing with it.

"Each soldier is awarded a Locker Certificate. One of the instructors gave Kallum Gregg's certificate, which was appreciated.

"At the moment, whenever one of the recruits messes up, the whole platoon gets 'beasted'."

In military speak, this means being punished through hard exercise and it is designed to help recruits bond.

Bob said: "Kallum will have to earn the right to wear The Yorkshire Regiment beret and capbadge, just as Gregg did."

Bob and Angie plan to attend an open day at the barracks on Saturday.

If he reaches the required standard, Kallum may get to spend the rest of the weekend at home.

Kallum is due to pass out in August and he hopes to be assigned to 3 Yorks.

“God bless both you, your late brother and your family, Kallum. I don't envy the training that you're doing though! ;) Best of luck.”
