07:00 - 07-May-2008

THERE is everything to aim for at the Mail's Business Awards 2008.

This year's accolades include ...

Business Of The Year Award

sponsored by Ernst & Young

The award, for exceptional performance in business, is open to companies with an annual turnover in excess of £2m during their latest full year. Entrants need to demonstrate outstanding success during their most recent full financial year. They will be judged on criteria ranging from exceptional growth and increased trading profit to development of services and products.

Small Business Of The Year Award

sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotland Group

Criteria for entry include turnover not exceeding £2m during the most recent full trading year. Entrants have to demonstrate solid success, be it growth in profit or turnover, exploiting new products, production techniques, services or markets.

Young Businessperson Of The Year Award

sponsored by Gosschalks Solicitors

Entrants must have been aged 40 or under on January 1 this year. They may be employed or self-employed and should be directly responsible for the success of their enterprise. Candidates will be able to demonstrate a significant role in improving profits, introducing new products and or services, or opening up new markets.

Start-up Business Of The Year Award

sponsored by Business Link Yorkshire

An award designed to promote and encourage the most vigorous of “green shoots” enterprises among the stream of new ventures emerging in this region.

The enterprise must be independent, not a subsidiary of another organisation, and have been established within the past two years.

The judges will be looking for evidence of early financial success and a sound business plan in place that is likely to ensure continued growth and sustainability.

Contribution To The Community Award

sponsored by Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare

An award created to honour those successful enterprises that follow the tradition of “putting something back” in terms of helping the community.

A range of initiatives will be eligible, such as the provision of sporting or recreational facilities; support for education or learning programmes; donations of equipment to schools and youth groups; or assistance to business start-ups.

Customer Service Award

sponsored by Sewell Group

This award will go to the company demonstrating a commitment to continuously improving its standards of customer service.

The judges will expect to see a clear, well-implemented customer care policy and examples of service exceeding customer expectations.

Communications Technology In Business Award

sponsored by Kingston Communications

This award will go to the company judged to have most successfully introduced new technology to improve communications with external or internal customers and/or suppliers and, where appropriate, is utilising e-commerce in its trading activities.

The judges will be particularly interested in the benefits the technology has brought to the business, both in terms of opening up new markets or in the improvement of existing ones.

Workforce Development Award

sponsored by Hull University Business School

This award will go to the company able to demonstrate a real commitment to the training and personal development of staff. The judges will want to hear about training policy and initiatives, how the company encourages management and organisational learning, and about the implementation of strategic training and development policies that have resulted in benefits to the business.

Design Excellence Award

sponsored by Hull Forward

This award is open to companies or individuals who have delivered design excellence in any sphere, including construction, new innovative products, multi-media productions or design solutions in manufacturing.

Interest will focus on designs featuring quality of materials and attention to detail to the overall environment of the end design.

Video profiles

sponsored by Bonus

Companies reaching the award finals will be profiled in videos to be shown at the awards presentation dinner in November. Companies or individuals entering The Business Awards must be based in Hull or the East Riding.
