New Caught On Camera appeal - cases 62-76 >video

Thursday, January 22, 2009, 06:30

Detectives are asking for continued support in identifying people wanted in connection with crimes across the city.

The Caught On Camera initiative has already cracked many cases thanks to the help of Mail readers.

The initiative publishes CCTV images in the Mail and online of people who police want to speak to in connection with various offences.

The latest appeal features an attack on a security guard.

Case file 75 is of two men wanted in connection with the assault on the security guard, which left him with a shattered eye socket.

The CCTV footage shows a group of young men enter Sainsbury's in Marfleet Lane, east Hull, on September 23 last year.

The guard prevents one of the group from stealing a pack of beer and he leaves, only to return.

On coming back into the store, he throws a waste bin taken from outside the store at the guard and, as the guard picks up the bin, he rushes towards him, forcing the bin into his face, fracturing his eye socket.

Detective Sergeant John Fuller, of the force's priority crime team, said: "The attack here was pretty bad and left the security guard with some very serious and painful injuries.

"If anyone recognises either of the two youths seen here, they should help us with our inquiries."

Det Sgt Fuller said the public had been a great help, particularly since images have been published in the new all-colour Mail, and urged people to continue helping them.

He said: "People providing us with information are helping their police force and helping make their neighbourhood a safer place."

There are also nine other case files showing people wanted in connection with burglary, fraud, theft and racially aggravated abuse.

Caught On Camera is a partnership between Humberside Police and the Mail that aims to help identify people thought to be responsible for crimes such as theft, burglary, robbery and assault.

The move to restart the initiative, which previously ran for a number of years, reflects a fresh impetus within the force to tackle these offences as well as improvements in the quality of CCTV footage.

Officers want to appeal not only to people who read the Mail in print, but also the growing number of users of the Mail's website.

Each image published by the Mail in print or online has a corresponding case number.

A hotline has been set up in Humberside Police's headquarters at Priory Road, west Hull, for readers to call.

Anyone with information should call (01482) 578025 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
