“As I said earlier, I begrudge our taxes being paid to people to sit and do nothing but with the way things are going at the moment it`s a bit unfair to lump every unemployed person together.
I think this £26,000 cap is at the top end of the scale. I can`t imagine anyone, even with a large family living in rented accomodation that costs thousands a month, in Hull.
With the recent redundancies from the public sector I think it`s only fair if the government gives a little leeway, say give the recently unemployed 6 months to find another job and then reduce benefits in three monthly lots.
The only other way would be to put the minimum wage up so it has to be worth going out to work.”
Tuesday, January 24 2012, 1:21PM
“Bobsbods, in principle I agree with you. However, I resent paying taxes to subsidise people who are getting a substantial amount more than me for not working.
I am sure many of these unfortunate people would like to work and cannot. Others realise they may get more for not working and resist looking for work. Some are just opportunists and get what they can for nothing.
Even £26,000 is much more than I earn. There must be a better way”
Tuesday, January 24 2012, 5:44PM
“marfleetmike
I suggested that on a news story a while ago and everyone was outraged.
I (obviously) think it's a good idea. Divide the amount of benefits they get by the minimum wage and let them work that number of hours. It would also create work for the people who have to supervise them.
Also, what people forget is that people on benefits get things like free dental care, free prescriptions, free eye tests, help towards spectacles, Healthy Start vouchers etc. This isn't factored in to the £26,000 cap.”
Wednesday, January 25 2012, 12:16AM
“I can't believe how much people get on benefits, no wonder none of them want to work!!! Nor how massive my tax burden is to support them. Are these figures real????
From all of the major parties, the minimum wage is set at around £240 per week. As all parties agree that this is an amount of income that people can live on why on this earth is anyone on benefits paid more than this?!!!!
There are millions (literally) of honest hard working people earning the minimum wage who would love to have an income anywhere near £26000 (I'm a department manager with huge responsibilities and only get £24000pa gross!!).
Totally wrong, cap it at £10000 and watch the number of scroungers suddenly become elegible to work!”
Wednesday, January 25 2012, 9:07AM
“Southernchef,
I`m pretty sure that the majority of people on benefits are not getting anywhere near £26,000. This figure depends on how many children you have and is mainly aimed at people living in high cost property in the more expensive areas of London.
Having said that, I still believe that no one should be getting more for not working than they do for getting a job.”
Wednesday, January 25 2012, 3:59PM
“I think a ceiling of 26k is more than generous, anyone relying on benefits should adjust their way of life accordingly, like all responsible people have to.
If I earn 32k, common sense dictates that I don't live a 50k kifestyle.
As Imagine_that says, these people are also exempt from prescription and dental charges etc, so in real terms they are getting considerably more for doing nothing.
Many people work very hard for much less than £26,000 so why should some sit back, do nothing and still be better off.
I believe that those on benefits who are able, should carry out work of some nature, surely this would make them ( the ones with a conscience ) feel that they are contributing something to society rather than just being a drain on the taxpayer. It would also help create a work ethic and give them some experience to call upon when seeking paid work. I'm sure that there are those who would love to get off benefits and into employement just as there are those who have no intention of ever seeking employment.
If there is no limit to the amount of benefits available it gives the impression that the government is providing absolutely no incentive to look foremployment.”
Wednesday, January 25 2012, 5:43PM
“QKhumba
Good points.
Also, virtually every criminal is on benefits of some sort so we are subsidising their criminal lifestyle. If they had to get up and go to work for their benefits every day it would give them a lot less time to get into trouble. And if they chose to come off benefits then that will be a red flag to the police to ask where is their income coming from.”

“Also a few months ago I was on the bus and a young lad was talking on his mobile telling someone about a factory job that he'd been forced to take by the Job Centre. He loved it and was telling them how good he felt being busy and going shopping with money in his pocket.”

my other more terrible side says in the old days birds stayed at home and looked after the house and kids maybe birds should stay at home as well theres a lots more jobs there ,,,
and lastly benefits was suppose to help people not be a way of living its only the few that have taken the p.ss out of the system ????????????”
Thursday, January 26 2012, 4:36AM
“I think you all need to go and look what the cap actually means. No one is getting 26k in state handouts to do what they please with. The vast majority of that is in housing benefit which goes directly to the landlord. Rent caps are what's needed, not benefit caps.”
Thursday, January 26 2012, 7:10AM
“ShanMil
There are (a few) people out there who have large families and for some reason have established the right to live in megga expensive areas in London.
Why should the people who own these properties be forced to drop the rent to accommodate people on benefits?
The whole point of the benefit cap is to tackle rents. The people living in houses that they could never dream of affording if they were working can then either find a propery that they can afford or the landlord can drop the rent if they want to keep renting it out to people on benefits.”

“These statistics were published in the Daily Telegraph in Aug 2010.
New figures from the Department for Work and Pensions show that there are 100,000 households who receive benefits and tax credits worth more than £23,244 a year.
Other figures published by the department showed that 175,000 households were entitled to £400 to £500 per week, (£20,800 to £26,000 a year)
50,000 households were entitled to more £500 a week (over £26,000 a year).”

“Tozza, if you advocate we get rid of computers you should set an example and be the first to do so. Abuse will get you nowhere and when I reach retirement age in 15 months, I will then consider retiring.
By the way I don't bull people. Just addressing your posts and the nonsensical content they contain.”
Saturday, January 28 2012, 11:59AM
“Wozza
Why do people think that your posts are 'fun'? They are just abusive and ignorant. You tell me that I shouldn't be asking your main man (pippa_mia) why she is posting so late yet you try telling people when they should retire and make comments about their age.
You are hardly in the first flush of youth (though if you were born in 1968 you are younger than your photo makes you out to be). You are a lot nearer to retirement age than you are to these younger people that you are talking about.
Oh but I forgot, you made a hilariously funny comment about the photo on your postings maybe not being you. I'm still laughing at that.
No sorry, hang on a minute. I'm actually laughing at your comment to pippa_cara that she isn't one of the clever people.”
Saturday, January 28 2012, 12:27PM
“Tozza, first of all, I must apologise for my grammatical error at the end of my last post. No doubt you spotted it but didn't wish to embarrass me by mentioning it.
I do not bully on this forum, I have merely asked you a few questions with regard to the comments you make. The most recent being your sexist comments about the Female Gender and your apparent disregard of women's right to work. Suffragettes fought hard against people like you, I'm sure they wouldn't like to go back to 'the good old days'.
I also asked if you would be prepared to be the first to get rid of your computer', after all, you made the suggestion. That isn't bullying.
By the way, have you made up with Pippa yet? She seems to have fallen out with you for some reason. Perhaps it was the sexist comment.”
Saturday, January 28 2012, 3:19PM
“Wozza,
MY thread is about the benefits cap. It has nothing whatsoever to do with working mums or computers. Neither is it a sounding board for you to abuse and insult perfectly legitimate posters when they try to answer your illegible ramblings.
Just for once, do you think you could compose a well constructed, intelligent and readable answer to the main thread on this forum?”

“Imagine that I do earn £35,000 before tax and like it or not, people live to their means and as I have never signed on (I imagine like you Bridrob) I feel entitled to a similar income to lessen the impact. I earn that much due to paying for my own education and having to sacrifice leisure and family time. With that in mind I consider myself to be a grafter.”
Sunday, February 12 2012, 6:41PM
“Agree flossyflathat,
The whole point of the limit is to make it better for people to work than be in benefits so if EastHFC gets £26k plus when s/he is out of work, there is no point in him/her ever going back. And how would it 'lessen the impact'? There wouldn't be an impact to lessen.
If someone wants to put their career over their family/leisure time that's their choice and their reward is their £35k salary. At least if you do lose your job and income, EastHFC, you will have plenty of time for both.”
Sunday, February 12 2012, 8:41PM
“EastHFC, I did sign on once for 3 weeks between jobs 45 yrs ago.
People who are not spongers should have a reasonable income if unfortunate to be out of work. but IMO, it should be 'horses for courses'.
At the end of the day, I am sure many workers resent people getting more on benefits than they earn in wages.
ps, Enjoyed myself at Wakefield today!”

“I should have probably said for a period of time (say 3-6 months) to get used to the immediate impact and loss of earnings. I think once a grafter then always a grafter like you have demonstrated Bridrobin (ps Rovers are Agars worst nightmare I think)). By the way, it came across that I neglected family time as opposed to staying up till ungodly hours trying to get my qualifications as I'm no genius unfortunately as my old school reports would probably testify. I understand what you're saying inthedogshed/flossyflathat (Great names by the way) but people who are workers get bored with being at home all the time and actively seek out work if only through pride.”

“EastHFC
In the 60s, when there was full employment, if you lost your job you got the dole of 50% of your previous earnings for 6 months. I remember that because a friend's father used to deliberately come out of work for 6 months every year. With his tax rebate, he was almost as well off as if he'd been working.
Obviously, he was able to walk back into work at the end of 6 months.”

“It is a attempt to get the working class to fight each other. ITS A FEW GREEDY LANDLORDS IN THE CENTRE OF LONDON. The people done get the money it goes straight to landlords via housing beafit payments. Single mothers with children cann't work.

The low wages paid is the reason that people cann't get off benafits.
what about the tax dodging rich, they don't worry about bus fares to work, or get on thier bikes.”

“am i the only one who can see whats wrong with this benefits cap? sometimes i feel like im in a zombie film surrounded by the brain dead or just mindless sheep who cant think past anything the goverment says. the problem stems from the fact that some people havnt had a pay rise in over 10 years. rich get richer while the rest of us are dive bombing towards the poverty line. shouldnt the goverment implement a new minimum wage thats makes it worth while to work. or at least see some benefit from working? no, that will never happen because the ones in the secret boys club with their silly secret hand shakes look after their own”

Yes, you are the only one with any insight into the political situation. Congratulations. It must be so frustrating to have to live with the rest of us numpties.
Now all you have to do is work on your punctuation, and you'll be perfect.
Seriously, no one should be better off on benefits and no one working should need benefits to make their income up to a living wage. I think I have already said this, but when this happens the tax payer is subsidising big business and of course the minimum wage should increase. However that will mean price rises as the same companies will have to meet these extra costs somewhere.”

“Wozza states and I quote,"2 rules should not be allowed at all".
Typical Wozza garbage, he is one of the worst for practicing dual standards. For example, his statement advocating we should all get rid of our pc's springs to mind. He didn't mean his own computer of course. Another example is his refusal to attempt to use basic English grammar. Of course, he expects the posts of others to be readable.
How's your 'bird' Wozza?”
Thursday, February 23 2012, 8:01PM
“I`m still trying to work out how MP`s being "out for themselves" has anything to do with people being given upwards of £35,000 for doing nowt.
I do agree that the minimum wage is far too low and I think it`s ridiculous that a government decides on a minimum wage and then has to top it up with various tax credits but this has been going on for too long now.
We`ve gone from being means tested and ashamed of being unemployed to have it all and be proud about it.”
Thursday, February 23 2012, 9:05PM
“Imagine_that - it's ok, you can count me in on this one. Idiot-thicko-clever-sensible person that I am. It's all our fault!
Flossy - it does seem to snowball, doesn't it? There are so many credits and benefits that people can qualify for that I can understand how a little bit of help can turn into a way of life (if you don't put the brakes on it yourself).
As I understand it the proposal is to simplify the benefits system so people who genuinely need help can get it without becoming entangled in red tape. In the process it has highlighted just how much can be claimed (legally) which makes strong, clear headlines.”
Friday, February 24 2012, 7:56AM
“jenoh
There is a lot of publicity about what the government plans to do, but little seems to be happening. I suppose it doesn't help that the Lords keep defeating the Bills and demonstrators take to the streets to protest about people being invited to do a couple of weeks' work for their benefits and, in the process, get some work experience and maybe even a job.
wozza seems to think he can sort everything out but won't actually tell us how. He'd rather start nonsensical threads and attack anyone who actually responds to him.”
Saturday, February 25 2012, 9:42PM
“Both my partner and I work and claim no benefits of any kind. However I am more than a little uncomfortable with the Governments intention to cap benefits at any level. It is easy for us to find 26,000 a generous sum to live on in Hull. In the south east this amount is rather paltry. I feel that the Government is playing a clever game with the 'anti-benefit' feeling that pevades society at the present time. I do believe that this proposed cap really is admittance that the Government have failed in managing an effective benefits system with a fair and morally sound safety net as was the Welfare State legislations' original intention. I despair that we have become a society (that calls itself civilised) that is all too ready to judge and write off a large part of the population in austere times. Are we really so harsh on the less fortunate? Do we really want a two tier society of have and have nots again?”
Monday, February 27 2012, 3:13PM
“I cannot agree with you amt555, I think you are missing the point. Many working people who pay their taxes do not earn anything approaching £26.000 per annum, never mind a figure exceeding this.
I do agree with you that people should be supported when out of work but to pay them more than those who are working is a slap in the face for them.
Also, I see the argument to match someones wage for a while if they are made redundant and are forced to seek work. But to continue paying out huge amounts of money for evermore gives no incentive whatsoever to them.
In many countries, the US included, blanket benefits are not available for everyone out of work. I do not advocate that we do the same in the UK but we should look at this issue in a sensible and practical way.
By the way, I consider myself to be 'left of centre' when it come to politics.”
Monday, February 27 2012, 6:10PM
“A_M
People who are made redundant get redundancy pay (if they have worked for them for at least 2 years) to help them over that initial period. The minimum is a week's wages for every year worked or 1.5 weeks if you are over 41. With a maximum limit of £430 a week.
Some companies pay considerably more than this.
In the 1960s the dole was half someone's wage for 6 months, but there was full employment then.”
Tuesday, February 28 2012, 6:40AM
“In 'normal' times redundancy is probably enough to see someone by until they find another job. It has happened to me twice and both times I got another job almost straight away. Obviously things are different at the moment but as so many economic immigrants are living and working in the UK, there must have been enough work to go round once.”
Thursday, March 01 2012, 10:09AM
“This discussion has centered around the ability and willingness of someone to find a job. Lets not forget that many vunerable people who will never work due to severe disability and their families that care for them will be affected by this. Providing 24 hours a day care for someone has many hidden expenses and these people should really recieve unlimited support from all of us that can work if we are still a civilised compassionate society.”

I assume that your garbled post is aimed at Apollo_Mouse, though as usual you expect us all to be mind readers.
Retirement age for men is currently 65. He isn't 65 yet so why should he retire without any income to replace his wage?
And how is working "trying to squeeze as much money out of the system as u can get"? Being on benefits with your feet up is squeezing money out of the system, working is putting money into the economy.
"im going to retire now" - hopefully from these forums. Permanently.”
Thursday, March 08 2012, 3:21PM
“Wozza,
So, you are going to do the decent thing and retire to let one of our youngsters take your job are you?
How many 18 year old long distance lorry drivers do you know?
What are you going to do for money? Sign on and live off benefits. Nice one...I don`t think.
The government decide when we retire unless we are lucky enough to have enough money to live on and even then we don`t get state pension until we are 66 now. This is because it`s cheaper to pay young people unemployment benefit than an older person state pension.”

“Where to start with this outstanding question, well here goes.
My view on the Benefits system has far been grossed by the very people that leech from it with no intention of ever returning anything back to the system they scrounge from.
The uproar you receive when trying to make somebody work for the benefits they receive which they have grown up to believe is their entitlement.
I work 40 hours a week to receive after tax pretty much the equivalent a jobseeker would receive inclusive of his/her housing costs and other benefit entitlements.
This country is hell bent on penalising the very people who try earn an honest living, the very people who make a community what it is, the very people who have shaped society, and favour those who scrounge and choose the inferior lifestyle, the drug/alcohol abuser and the criminals.
Just the other day whilst watching TV i learnt that a naval crew aboard a HMS Submarine get an average of £2.34 a day in their food allowance, that is less than someone in Her Majesties Royal Palace of Scumbags gets, so who did the math there? You serve your country and do a heroic job 24/7 and you get treated worse than someone who doesnt work and the only heroic act he ever did was boasting to friends alike how he stole from some 89 Year old pensioner last weekend.
I Believe benefits should be earnt or stripped, no feeling sorry because you cant afford to live, the option there would be get a job and earn a living. If you choose to have children whilst claiming the state then you should not receive anything further for that child, you have a brain well a percentage of you do think about the future and how you might support that child before letting some blow his beans up your muff in the local park.
Stringent vetting of all claiments should be introduced and more surveillance added for those wishing to flout the system. Claiments from abroad should be made to stay in their own countries if they wish to claim public funds afterall we are not a take all you can country or are we? The answer be Yes and its for that very reason we are in this sorry state, no amount of moaning and complaining will ever create justice or fairness in this land. To many people who are born or employed to intervene and stand up for the people who demise our land are to blame, the ones who say you cant say that or you cant do that its not fair, when really it is fair and all that comes with the actions you take is fair, you afterall are in charge of what you do.
I think thats fair enough to say my pledge is over as for each and every word of spoken truth nothing i say will ever be set in stone, so lets just wave goodbye to fair and justified moral society.”
