“Might be worth ringing KC to see if they can block them, been getting a few myself and can be annoying.”

“KC can't block them I'm afraid. Only 'withheld' ones.

Do you have caller display on your phone? I do and can see when it's International so either don't answer or at least know who I am going to scream at when I answer.

    Try

Changing the subject slightly, I have had 3 different lots of people knocking on my front door over the last 4 days asking me to start a direct debit for whatever charity name is on their tabards. Well the first two were, the third asked me if I knew what Gift Aid was and I said I did and closed the door. Has anyone else had this? I wish I'd looked into the Gift Aid thing as I'm wondering if he was going to suggest that I pretended I'd donated so that his charity could claim it.”

    “Imagine_that,
We don`t have caller display but only because I didn`t bother to sort it. I`ll do it when I can find the instruction booklet and have time.
The problem is when you`re waiting for this type of call, you grab the phone without looking anyway. Mind you I`ve screamed profanities at so many cold callers over the past two days that word may get around that there`s a mad woman on our number and with a bit of luck they`ll give up.”

If your phone has the facility you have to get KC to turn it on - as far as I can remember.

I had an International call a few minutes ago and just ignored it. My caller display is on quite a big screen so it's hard to ignore.”

“Got a call myself yesterday, some guy asking for my postcode, obviously never gave it to him.

And yeah you have to ask KC to switch on caller display.”

“I find if you just answer it and say, hang on I'll just get him/her and just leave the phone on the side, eventually you will hear the line clear siren and they have paid for a long wait, they dont ring back.

    “HullandProud,
I have tried that in the past but at the moment we are waiting for updates on a very sick child. I really have better things to think about than stupid calls, the majority of which are scam ones anyway.
On friday we had at least 6 cold calls, you know the one`s, were you get 10 seconds of silence before the call clicks in. I usually just put the phone down. Yesterday we had 3 in the space of 5 minutes. By this time I`m really annoyed so when the first one asked to speak to me I said no and put the phone down. The second asked for my husband and when I asked what he wanted, he said it was about our computer (a well known scam call) I told him to go forth and multiply then put the phone down.
The third one was an obscene one which I actually found quite funny. The words sad, pathetic, tiny and baby`s dummy were mentioned (by me) and strangely we haven`t had one since.
We did have a spate of these calls a couple of months ago and on one occasion my husband answered the phone and was told the call was about` Windows`. My husband told them we were double glazed throughout and they stopped for a while.
Maybe, when all this stress is over I`ll try playing them at their own game, could be fun.”

I have a whistle by the phone. So far I have not used it but ...

I have also done the 'put the phone down to look for myself' trick too, but they never stop do they?

Someone out there must be making it worth their while and buying whatever they are trying to sell.”

    “Inthedogshed,
Most of the ones we get are from Market Research so I assume certain companies pay them to annoy us. The computer/windows one is a scam that I heard about ages ago and then was on the BBC news a couple of weeks ago. apparently they ask you to log onto your computer, type something in and then read off a number that comes up. That done they tell you that you have serious problems and you must give them pass words and such. Once they`ve got them they`re in your comp and have access to all your details.
I`m sure they must get sworn at and abused many times but I suppose there`s always one sucker that makes it worth their while.
My aunt used to own a pub and got loads of obscene calls. She kept a whistle too but if I`m honest I enjoyed the putdown an awful lot more. Luckily I`m not of a sensitive nature.”

“I have lived at my house for 4 years now.. and I still get these calls for the previous people (albeit few and far between now thankfully) ... I am always polite to them, and I tell every one of them that the person they want no longer lives at this address, so can you remove this number from your database please ... it seems to work, as i hardly get any now. I don`t think the answer is to be nasty, or shouting or even ignoring them, cos they just ring back. If they think the person they want is no longer there, they wont waste their time.”

Cold callers don't care who they speak to. They may ask for a person by name because that is what it says on their records, but they really just want to speak to whoever lives in the house and is answering the phone.”

    “Well I am!

A few months ago I was ill in bed on a Sunday when I got called by someone tring to sell me conservatory blinds. I told him that I didn't think that Sundays was an appropriate time to call and he said "I'm sorry madam, but we work 7 days a week."

I replied "Well I don't" and put the phone down.

I don't ask them to ring me at home during the evenings and weekends so if I am less than welcoming, tough.”

“Just watched a couple of Doorstep 999 programmes (BBC1) and some cold callers are just trying to get people to agree to having salesmen call round who then put on loads of pressure on them (usually the elderly) to buy something at ridiculous prices.

The problem is, you never know when you answer the phone if the cold caller is genuine or a scam artist. Best to ignore them all.”

“We used to get loads of these sorts of calls and went through every channel to get them to stop.Inc registering with the t.p.s.That only stops them for a year then there back again.
We also had caller display, but that just lets you know the number (not who exactly it is).
If you get call barring that will do the trick.Although kc charge for that service aswell as everything else. Our solution worked a treat,as we dont get any of these very annoying calls anymore........Get rid of your landline.Alternatively you could just give the hospital your mobile number. It works out alot cheaper for us than kc.”
