“I wonder if it's because we are traditionally a cycling city that we haven't quite got our heads round the idea that other vehicles use the road as well? Tonight during my taxi journey into work I saw a man with all the proper hi-vis gear and flashy lights on his bike merrily cycling through two red lights. He was careful and observant but at one junction (Anlaby Road/Ferensway) he had to swerve to avoid a completely dark cyclist turning right into Anlaby Road through a red light.
Having said that, I'm fairly sure that my taxi cut him up at one point and also the driver took the opportunity to honk at someone he judged to be driving badly once we got to Castle Street roundabout. To do this he followed them for a brief moment towards the Ice Arena, honked, then went back into the correct lane. He then explained how badly they were driving (they were't doing anything wrong really) and how on earth were they supposed to interpret his honks?
    Terrifying.”

“As a cyclist who never goes through red lights or cycles on the pavement I am horrified by the behaviour of motorists who cut cyclists up and pedestrians who walk out into the road without a thought, especially in front of cyclists.

I have had a few complaints from cyclists in East Park when my dog has been on the footpath, but just as many from runners. People are just selfish and think the world belongs to them, when in fact it belogs to me.

And as jenoh says, you have probably seen a lot of cyclists because Hull is flat and we just have more cyclists because of that,”

“I have been a cyclist for since i was a teenager and have always ridden my bike the same way as i drive a car ie stop at red lights, signal etc. I get really annoyed with cyclists who ride through red lights on pavements etc - It gives all cyclists a bad name.
I used to cycle in London where I thought the traffic was pretty bad but Hull drivers are the worst I have ever come across as far as being aware of cyclists.
Someone council ? police ? needs to educate both sides”

“Until I was made redundant, I drove for years from Hedon Road via Marfleet,Laburnam Ave and Chamberlain Road and every day passed black or darkly clad cyclists .
In the dark wet winter days these idiots risked serious injury or worse despite a set of lights and a viz vest being less than a tenner and these people were obviously working.
Some of them rode two abreast down Marfleet Lane alongside a cycle path, others rode on the pavement down Chamberlain Road, across the top of streets without so much as a glance around.
I was always surprised there were not more of these cyclists knocked down.”

“It should be legal to ram cyclist's who are riding without lights or who choose to ignore traffic signals, and when you have done it, you should be able to claim compensation for any damage caused to your car.”

“Most of my walk to work is along a designated cycle/pedestrian path. The cycle path is wider by at least half again and has signs at regular intervals stating which side is cycle and which side is for walking. They even have a picture of a bike painted onto the path for the illiterates.
Why then do so many cyclists insist on riding along the pedestrian way and then get uppity when I refuse to move out of their way?”

    “Flossy,
Yesterday one of the motorised bicycles came up behind me on a busy pavement, when I challenged the rider, who scared the bejesus out of me, she said the road was too busy!
With bikes and mobility scooters there is little room for mere pedestrians.
The only cyclists on pavements should be children.”

And why do so many pedestrians insist on walking along the cycle part of the path?

Wonder who will be the first bright spark to call for cyclists to pay vehicle exercise duty, taking into account that approximately 50 models of cars are zero rated. (i.e. don't pay road tax)”

“We should adopt the same laws as they have in Holland and Belgium - in any accident between a cyclist and a car it is assumed to be the drivers fault unless they can prove otherwise. I'm quite happy to pay VED for my bike - bearing in mind it is emission free and therefore tax free”

“Some Cyclist are dangerous but can you blame them for cycling on the path when their is so many morons driving on the roads be it bus ,car, truck and even motorbikes. But i must admit the way they ride in general leaves alot to be desired, riding with no lights or ear phones plugged in riding no handed going through red lights and weaving between traffic. I was driving a truck over north bridge during the day and a adult bloke shot in to the road off the cycle path without looking and ploughed straight in to the side of my wagon ,i shouted at the idiot out of the window. i stopped to make sure he was ok , he was but very very shook up.
His actions could of cost him his life and no doubt i would of been to blame for his reckless riding.”

“I am sure that cyclists have as many stories of dangerous driving by motorists as motorists have of dangerous cycling by cyclists. The main difference being, the cyclist will usually come off worse if there is a collision.

And both cyclists and motorists will all have had problems with careless pedestrians, and we are all pedestrians.”

“We all have our horror stories of the rights and wrongs of both the cycling and motorised fraternity but nothing will change as our roads cannot cope with the level of traffic we have these days. I have seen pictures of old Hull with wide open roadways and free flowing traffic. These days its every man, and woman, for themselves and to hell with everyone else on over crowded roads.

At some point restrictions on car travel will have to be introduced, on many driveways, street sides you see the extent of the increase in car ownership using the same amount of roadways Hull has had for years. Add to this lorries and buses and you see the results at most times of the day. You only need a minor accident on one of Hull's major road and the city centre is gridlocked, then river traffic causes more misery which only adds to motoring frustration. And nothing is going to change anytime soon so bad motoring and cycling will be the norm.”

Looking at old photos you wonder why they built the roads as wide as they did when there was so little traffic.”

“Hull is typical of many Uk cities where the infrastructure has failed to keep up with demand. Maybe the council should introduce a pollution charge for vehicles entering the city centre.”

    “John1947,
The city centre is struggling, I think a congestion/pollution charge would kill trade,
The out of town retail parks would get all the business.”

“Re 69: Well I can only assume they built the roads they did to take into consideration proposed expansion of traffic but not on the scale that we have now. If I can just take an example of houses not far from me, in one house 5 cars, another 2 houses have 3 each and it goes on, side streets are crammed with cars, the buses I travel on can hardly get through, so restriction of some sort, unpopular though that will be, is the only option I can see.”

“No amount of pavement cycling can cause the deaths and traffic chaos that is attributable to motorists. Look at the recent Castle Street incident.

The cycle lanes on Hedon Road, as with the others, are not compulsory. Indeed, given that they break for factory entrances, where lorries go in and out, they are more dangerous in parts than the main carriageway.”

“I saw one of these idiot cyclists on the way home from work tonight.

Plenty of lights on even though it wasn't dark, hi-vis clothing, helmet and gloves, all in all he was pretty well equipped for his ride home down the tricky Springbank.

The one thing he was lacking was a brain.

What other explanation could there be for this idiotic, middle aged man in Lycra to ride through every red light and weave between traffic causing cars to slam their brakes on to avoid hitting this fool.

Hopefully, fate will play it's part with this moron and he will get what's coming his way. My only hope is that the car doesn't sustain too much damage.”

“Mr DJ, I am a motorist, I love cars and love driving. I am a considerate and careful driver and am happy to share the roads with motorbikes and bicycles. I will still stand by my statement that Hull has dreadful cyclists. I have also noted that Spring Bank has crazy pedestrians, they seem to just walk in to the traffic whilst looking in the opposite direction.”
