“Depends what you`re shopping for. Bransholmes ok for food shopping but once I`ve finished work I can`t get out the place quick enough. Not that there`s anything wrong with either the centre or Bransholme but you can have too much of a good thing.
Princes Quay for clothing and bits.
There`s a great papercraft shop in Princes Quay too, or at least there was last time I went.
St Stephens is a waste of space.”

“I am inclined to agree with you there Flossy. Haven't been in Prince's Quay for ages and i much prefer to go somewhere that is easy and free to park so that's St. Steve's out of the question (although it's free in Tescos it's a mad fight for the bays). Yes i find i can get most of what I'm after at B/holme, and there's a Poundland there too, ha.”

“To Flossyflathat , Thanks for spotting it correctly and your response .
In all honesty I do feel that there is to much " daftness " if that is
a right word , on many of the posts that are submitted and it can
to my idea be a bit of a turn off when it comes to wanting to take
part in the Forum . I would like to see more of the more
    constructive posts submitted .”

“Sorry woodtouch1 but you do hear people say "I'll meet you in prozziesenna at 2. Roughly translated this is Hull-speak for "I'll meet you in the Prospect Centre at 2 o'clock." Similarly 'Prinnyquay is Prince's Quay'. Might be confusing if you're out in the sticks.”

“Actually, being common as I am, I do say Prinny quay when I`m speaking to certain people but would never dream of writing it that way.
I`ve never said Prozzie Senna though. Sounds a bit like medicine for a constipated lady of the night.

    woodtouch1,

    I have to agree about `constructive posts`.
Lets get a decent debate going where we can all air our views, state our differences, disagree without descending to throwing insults about.”

Yes but a debate about what?

I don't know if you ever looked at the other thisis forums but there seems to be a very nasty running feud between 2 posters on thisisgrimsby and the rest are virtually dormant.”

“To be honest I think the only active forums are those on a single subject, and even then most people join with closed minds and they usually just end in slanging matches. Unless it's a fan club type forum.”

“I did try a few months ago to change this forum so that at least
part of it was constructive, I chose a subject which I am
particularly keen - The history of Hull - going back to the
days of the Wall , I was hoping that some of the good folk
of Hull may join in , giving the names of old buildings for
a start, such as " The Black Boy " " Wilberforce House "
" Maister House " " Trinity House " " The Old Grammar School"
" Trinity Market" " Holy Trinity" to name a few , and all
within the boundry of the Wall . There are lots more - if
you look up " Harvatt - a Little Bit Of Hull's History " on the
internet and " ezraharvattezraharvatt.com " also on the
internet you will see some of the facts about Hull that I
managed to come across . There are so many old buildings
still standing within this area of Hull . The leader of the
council is - at long last talking of bringing the Trinity
Market back to it's rightful home , it started there some
700 years ago and was then moved by The Civic Society .
    .
There are lots of other subjects that could be spoken of
on the Forum , we just need that bit of effort .

The Maitime History , The Fishing Industry , Industry
generally , Old Shops . There must be so many stories
    that could be told !

I hope I have not spoken out of turn .

    Regards .”

You didn't see the posts then? They were really vicious. Can't imagine they would be allowed on this site.

But like I keep saying, if people want to post on here they should post regardless and drown the arguments out. I still can't get over that only Mimi and myself posted on that one about if you were paid in happiness what job would you do.”

Maybe they are the sorts of subjects that the forums should be about and I do remember that you got a good number of responses on one, but were disappointed when the thread dried up.

But unless you go onto a specialist site, no discussion of that sort is going to last forever. People post their memories of old shops for example and after a while everyone who has memories has posted and the thread comes to a natural end.

While arguments can go on and on and on and on ... :-/”

“"Branny No Po" surely? If we're going to abbreviate words in such a way that it's not actually quicker to say.

For the record, I have heard "Prinny Quay" but never "Prozzie Senna" and flossy's definition of what that might mean was very funny.

Off topic, but why do people say "Princess Quay" and "Princess Avenue"? They must hear/see the correct pronunciation/spelling all the time.”

“Agree - but so many people do say WWW and these days, and even if it's for a web site address, who doesn't know how to type that bit in?

But then you'd probably say "the usual bit in the front" which is nearly as long.”

“I chuckled at Flossy's definition too. It's not a phrase I use myself because i whince when I hear it said but I've heard it on a couple of occasions. Being around younger people so much perhaps (my son is seventeen and his entourage might have used the term) means i pick up on the slang phrases.”

I meant the top line on the screen where the web site's address appears. I tried a couple and it didn't bring me the web page unless I typed the full name with the www bit but I think it depends which one you type. Something like 'facebook' would come up without it.

Obviously with google search being so efficient now you can just type the name into it and it brings up what you want immediately. I doubt many people use that top web page address anymore or even look at it but I can remember using the internet pre google and even looking at information about the best way to type in search criteria - such as some search engines needed " " around words and others didn't.”

Going back to your comment about www being quicker to type, surely we were talking about saying abbreviated words as in your comment "If we're going to abbreviate words in such a way that it's not actually quicker to say. "

And double you double you double you is said quite a lot, as in a voice over at the end of TV programmes saying something like "If you want to find out more about this subject go to our web site at double you double you double you dot ??? dot co dot you kay."

Obviously it's not an abbreviation of choice, unlike the ones at the start of this thread.

And if you remove Tesco's from the equation, Prospect Centre probably has the biggest range of shops. But for serious shopping I'd use the worldwideweb. Including on line grocery shopping, I think the only thing I'd need to go to the shops for is cat litter. And even then, the pet warehouse I buy it from delivers.”
