“I think you will find that "badger" is not listed as vermin in the OED plumduff.

However, opinion accepted as 1 out of a population of an estimated 350,000 in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

    Anyone else?”

There are an awful lot of vermin about - and most of them are humans as shown on the neverending crime stories on the HDM web site not forgetting the hundreds that are not reported multiplied by all the towns and cities in the UK.

Then we can look at the ones who live abroad, but by that point we are seriously running out of numbers to count them...

If I had to chose between having a badger living in my garden and that idiot who set fire to the block of flats to pretend he was saving the residents ... mmmm ... hard one!

Thanks for the link. I did sign one the other day but I'm sure it was a different one. On the Care petition site. Have signed this now.

For all the problems they caused the country at least Labour were on the badgers' side and didn't want a cull.”

And I don't suppose the government enforces drug laws for a laugh either do they? Or spend so much police time and resources searching out cannabis growers?”

“As always it comes down to money with the government.

If, and it hasn`t been proven, badgers are responsible for passing TB to cattle, the government subsidy to farmers goes up.
    Vaccinating badgers also costs money.

    I`ve signed the petition.”

Exactly what I was going to write. And they probably wouldn't be able to sell the beef to certain countries if the cows had been vaccinated (as with the foot and mouth vaccine) though they don't seem to care how many growth hormone vaccinations they are given.”

When the government decide to cull people with TB, or even people who don't actually have TB but are suspected of carrying TB, and if there's a petition against that, I'll sign it.

    Promise.”

“@Robin4Life ... it is true some badgers do carry bTB, however, so do some deer and some squirrels and some cats and some birds. Would you have all of them shot to prevent re-infecting the cow?

The fact is that shooting badgers or just vaccinating badgers will not stop cattle from being re-infected with bTB - the figure quoted is a 16% reduction. Is that figure really worthy of removal of an estimated 130,000 animals from the British landscape?

A sensible policy would be to vaccinate the cow, together with further improved domestic herd husbandry and also leave vaccine dosed bait for the wildlife, but for some strange reason the Conservatives cancelled five out of the six bovine vaccination trials.

    Recent article from the Guardian...

    http://tinyurl.com/8uspkqs

As a side issue (and I know I previously knocked plumduff for the interpretation of vermin) were you also aware that DEFRA are sneaking through policy which will allow for any animal to be reclassified as nuisance to allow culling - this potentially means otters being killed if sport fishermen are not catching enough, re-introduced raptors, ie. kites, buzzards, being shot or poisoned "legally" because they are a threat to grouse shoots and we all know what the Conservatives feel about foxes.

Open season is coming to UK wildlife. The badger cull is one of those lines in the sand where the like minded (whom I believe to be in the majority) have to get together and say NO.”

“Badgers have inhabited the British Isles longer than human beings. Their fossilised remains have been found in ancient rock strata. It is an outrage that culling is to be sanctioned by law. I say we should be culling the Tory landowners and those idiots who so boringly and wrongly claim that urban dwellers don't understand country matters. The TB link is largely unproven and besides culling isn't the only option. I say - Save the Badger! We are privileged to live alongside these beautiful creatures. We should NOT have licence to murder them.”
