There's nothing quite like escaping for the weekend after a long week at work – and you don't have to go far to get away from it all.

My mum and I choose to visit York on our recent girlie trip and after just a 45 minute drive, we were checking into Hotel Du Vin.

Set in a grade two listed building close to the city's historic centre, it features elegant boutique rooms and a bistro-style restaurant.

Our room was a very generous size, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. It overlooked a busy street but, due to the extra glazing, we were not at all disturbed by noise.

The lounge area, complete with sofas, made it feel more like a suite and was the perfect place to unwind with a glass of wine after a long soak in the free-standing bath.

After a little look around the hotel, with its private dining rooms, snug little bar areas, inner courtyard and wine cellar, we decided there was no need to venture out into the cold and, instead, we ate in the hotel's bistro. After we had chosen from the extensive menu, we were expertly helped by the sommelier to choose a bottle of wine, according to our taste, preference and budget. The food was top class and beautifully presented. The whole evening was very relaxed, the food amazing and staff very attentive.

The breakfast menu was just as extensive – though we still felt quite full from the evening meal.

In my opinion, no girlie trip is complete without a trip to the spa – so we had booked ourselves into Middlethorpe Hall & Spa.

Although it's famous for its plush overnight accommodation, it can also be used as a day spa, too.

From the moment the butler opened the front doors for us, I knew we were in for a treat and could soon see why it has a reputation for superior service and standards.

The spa is set in what can only be described as a cute Tardis-like cottage, opposite the grand 18th-century country house.

Inside we found a modern spa with its pool, steam room, sauna and whirlpool bath which offered a tranquil way to pass a pleasant few hours.

We were invited upstairs for our treatments – a simple manicure and a pedicure, both of which were completed to perfection. The staff were very friendly and we were both impressed with our treatments.

We then sat downstairs by the open fire while we waited for our nails to dry, before leaving the luxury of the spa and heading back into town for some shopping.

Our whole trip was planned with the help of Visit Yorkshire and whether it is shopping, leisure, places to stay, things to do, offers or events, you will find a wealth of information on the website to help you plan the perfect local break.
