Neglect dog rescued from certain death
07:00 - 01-May-2008
The dachshund was found wandering the streets malnourished, without teeth and with knotted and matted fur.
Harry and Joseph Sylvester, eight, have been hailed as heroes for rescuing the dog from what would have been certain death.
The unnamed animal is now being nursed back to health by staff from Hull Animal Welfare Trust, where he is having to be hand-fed because of his lack of teeth.
Leah Elvidge, from the charity, told the Mail the catalogue of neglect must have gone on for “months and months”.
She said: “It is shocking and total neglect. We could not believe his little face. It is the worst case of sheer neglect we have ever seen.
“He was in such a state we had to take him immediately to the vets and when she saw him she was crying.
“He is shockingly thin, absolutely skeletal, and has matted hair. He has a malformation of the face and he has to be hand-fed because he has not got any teeth.
“If he had been out in the storm on Sunday he would not have survived.”
The boys had been playing football outside their grandparents' home on Sunday when they spotted him.
They immediately raised the alarm and, with their grandad, Allan, helped him back to the house.
Their grandmother, Rosemarie, said: “If the boys had not shouted we would never have spotted him.
“They are the heroes. They were gutted at the state of him. They wept to think no one had brushed him.
“He was such a sweet little thing. Whoever let him get in that state should be ashamed of themselves.”
