Pupils take on vegetable challenge

07:00 - 08-May-2008

Pupils from St Nicholas Primary School in west Hull helped launch a new competition highlighting the importance of a healthy and well-balanced diet.

The Young Growers Challenge involves 35 East Yorkshire primary schools growing their own vegetables for a share of £1,000 worth of prizes.

East Riding Council, Bishop Burton College, Driffield Agricultural Society, Birds Eye and Waitrose, have joined forced to run the challenge.

The aim is to help children find out more about the origins of their food, a healthy and well-balanced diet, and what it takes to grow vegetables.

Pupil Miguel Barrulas, 11, said: “It's important to find out where your food comes from.

“The year sixes have been planting rocket and potatoes and checking on them regularly. They seem to be coming along really well.”

The challenge culminates with the schools producing a basket of vegetables, a plate of frozen peas and a poster, for the judges at Driffield Show on Wednesday, July 16.
