Teachers' warn of more schools strike

12:50 - 25-April-2008

Teachers in East Yorkshire warned today there could be further disruption to pupils as they fight for a better pay award.

They said yesterday's strike by hundreds of staff over a below-inflation 2.45 per cent pay offer was “just the beginning”.

The action was by the National Union of Teachers (NUT), which has 3,000 members in Hull and the East Riding.

Brian Swinton, acting divisional secretary for the East Yorkshire branch of the NUT said: “The campaign doesn't stop here.

“We are going to look at every other kind of campaigning means.

“We are conscious that we don't want to be striking all the time but ... there are other tactics that we are considering.”

In Hull, 19 schools were fully closed and 27 schools were partially closed. A total of 411 teachers took action, out of 2,417, and 15,419 children were affected.

Martin Reed, senior vice president of the NUT, who is a teacher at Wolfreton School in Kirk Ella, told the Mail: “We will take a cool, careful look at the next step. I'm not ruling anything in, and I'm not ruling anything out.

Not everyone was in support of the strike action.

Annabelle Lea has a daughter Jasmine, 12, who goes to Driffield School.

She said: “My honest thoughts are that teachers over the past two years have had pay rises over the rate of inflation and just because this award is below inflation doesn't mean they should strike.

“They should take the rough with the smooth and accept what they have been given.

“It is very disruptive for the children.”

The NUT strike affected dozens of schools across Hull and the East Riding.
