'At the end of the day, it's drivers who are in control'
In partnership with the police, we have made massive progress into numbers killed and seriously injured on the roads over recent years but we do seem to have reached a plateau.
It seems to be very difficult to continue the reductions we were achieving before.
That is not going to be helped by the fairly acute pressures that we will be under budget-wise on things such as road safety improvements and general maintenance of roads. It is going to be more and more difficult to reduce those accident figures even further.
It will be important that we continue to work with the police but it's also important that drivers work with us as well because, at the end of the day, it's drivers who are in control. It's essential drivers take responsibility to make sure they are driving safely.

“How can drivers be expected to make allowances for idiots who walk out onto the road without looking, walk onto the road wearing headphones, walk out onto the road whilst using a mobile phone etc ? It's always the driver who has to shoulder the blame. when will some pedestrians learn to have a duty of care for themselves ???”
