Beverley Folk Festival 'under threat'

07:00 - 14-May-2008

EAST Riding Council is backing plans to help the Beverley & East Riding Folk Festival survive in the town.

Residents are also being given their say of the future of the popular festival, which attracts thousands of visitors to the market town.

The organisers say the annual event, which celebrates its 25th anniversary next month, is not financially viable in its current format.

A public consultation meeting will now be held on Thursday, May 22, in the Tiger Inn, Lairgate, Beverley, at 7.30pm.

Options for the future include scaling down the three-day festival or moving it out of Beverley altogether.

Alan Menzies, East Riding Council's director of planning and economic regeneration, said: “We would be happy to help because the festival is brilliant for the town and region.

“It is one of a number of festivals held in Beverley that attract thousands of tourists and visitors, and benefit the local economy.”

The three-day Beverley & East Riding Folk Festival will be held from June 20 to 22.
