Fledgling festival 'could rival Glastonbury' one day
07:00 - 15-May-2008
The fledgling festival will be welcoming seven rocking and rootsy blues bands to the Holderness village of Burton Pidsea when it opens its gates for the fourth year running next month.
And the event, which attracted more than 1,000 festivalgoers last year with its combination of live music, real ale, hog roasts and custom bike shows, is hoping to more than double its size this year as it aims to raise much needed funds for the village's Memorial Hall.
Joint organiser Steve Winterburn, said the festival was already establishing a name for itself as a quality event among live music lovers.
“It started out as a bit of a bikers' rally but it's now turned into more of a fun festival for the whole family, sort of like a mini Glastonbury. There's more and more interest in the event and the whole village gets involved,” says Steve.
Among the acts already lined-up for this year's event are The Dukes, Slack Alice and Aynsley Lister who will be taking to the stage on Friday, June 6, and The Howling Mad Ribena Berries, Straight Razor and The Brew who will be playing on Saturday, June 7.
“We did the first festival with just a few local bands,” says village postman and co-organiser David Sharp, “but it's grown way beyond that now. It's great that we actually have people contacting us now to see if they can take part.
“We're delighted this year because we've got Slack Alice, who are a well-known name and a big draw on the blues and rock circuit and people like Aynsley Lister who's a real rising star.
“The emphasis, though, is still on it being a nice friendly festival. We've never had any trouble and everybody always just comes to have some fun. We've had people come from as far as Somerset and Scotland to take part in the event – so we know the name is slowly spreading.”
Like Glastonbury, there will be camping on the playing fields site next to the main stage area. Unlike Glastonbury it will be free to camp although it would be best to book first,” says Steve.
To give the Tribal Gathering its unique atmosphere, all of the craft and food stalls coming to the event will be selling local produce – including beer from the Great Newsome Brewery at Winestead and a hog roast from Fitling's Hot Trotters pork suppliers.
The Tribal Gathering festival will be held at Burton Pidsea Memorial Hall, Burton Pidsea, from Friday, June 6, to Sunday, June 8. Tickets cost £8 advance, £10 on gate, and children are free with an adult. For more details call 07786 915122.
