The Kabeedies: We like a good rumpus!

Monday, November 16, 2009, 06:30

There is nothing The Kabeedies like more than a good rumpus – which is probably why they called their debut album it.

"It's a good word Rumpus, isn't it? says Rory Hill, the band's singing bassist. "It just seems to convey a feeling of naughty anarchy, a bit of rough and tumble. We thought that summed us up really, so when someone thought of the word it immediately stuck."

It's been a gradual climb into the light for the Norwich foursome after fist coalescing together out of various other East Anglian bands in 2007.

They've released taster EPs, landed profile-boosting support slots with the likes of The Futureheads and CSS and even touted their musical wares around the Glastonbury and Latitude festivals.

An invitation to record a live session for Radio One also boosted the band's pulling power but it's only now, with the release of Rumpus earlier this week, that the Talking Heads-inspired group seem to be garnering the recognition they've striven for.

"The Radio One session really helped," says Rory. "Suddenly promoters think you're going to be able to pack their venues out because you've been on national radio. It opens a lot of doors.

"Glastonbury is pretty cool too. You find yourself sitting backstage next to someone like Cerys Matthews and you suddenly feel like a massive fraud, thinking 'I'm going to be found out in a minute and get chucked out'.

"But everyone was really cool and accepting. It did make us feel like we were in a proper band for the first time."

A celebratory seven-date tour to mark the album's release will bring the band to The Lamp, in Norfolk Street, Hull, on Tuesday, November 24, when the group will be introducing fans to their new, LP-enhanced set list.

It should be a party to remember with three Hull bands, Shape Up, The Smallvilles and The Walls, all providing the warm-up for the main event.

"It's weird to have a real, proper album out," says Rory. "It's like we've been rehearsing for the past two-and-a-half-years and this is the end result. Whatever happens now, we can always say we've had an album out.

"We haven't really set ourselves any targets for it. We don't think that specifically. We just want to get as much exposure as possible and see what happens. I think if people hear it, they will like it.

"We've had such an amazing year that we just want to be able to continue doing what we're doing.

"Obviously, we won't deny the big dream is to play arenas and make a really good living out of our music – but we're realists. We know that doesn't happen to very many people.

"For us this isn't really a job. It's too much fun to be a job, it's more a lifestyle. We do take the music really seriously – but everything else around it is a laugh. As long as we're successful enough to keep on doing that, we'll be happy."

The Kabeedies play The Lamp, Norfolk Street, Hull, on Tuesday, November 24, 8pm. Entry costs £4 on the door. Call (01482) 326131.
