The loudest band in NYC plays The Welly

Tuesday, May 13, 2008, 07:00

As psychedelic rock band A Place To Bury Strangers heads to The Welly to promote their debut release, the double A-side single To Fix The Gash In Your Head and Ocean, the group is hoping the event won't be too explosive.

The trio, who have been dubbed the loudest band in New York City, hope the amps will be able to handle their sound.

“I am psyched, I can't wait to see a bunch of old friends and a lot of the bands we are playing with are really cool,” says frontman and guitarist Oliver Ackermann.

“I guess I'm most afraid of what amps we are going to be using and if we are gonna blow all of the equipment we are borrowing.

“We are quite prone to blowing up speakers and blowing the power out of venues, but I would prefer playing a bunch of shows rather than spending all my time fixing and working on amps.”

Oliver is joined in A Place To Bury Strangers by bassist Jono Mofo and drummer Jay Space.

The band will be playing the Welly on Thursday, May 15, to promote their debut release, which was released earlier this month.

They come to the country on the back of rave reviews from the media and after making their mark on the prestigious South By Southwest (SXSW) festival, in Austin, Texas, this year.

“The major breakthrough came when we released the album in the US,” says Oliver.

“For some reason people really took notice of it and liked it a lot. It made me feel really good that there was such a great reaction because it is all self-recorded and produced and I always wondered if anyone liked the same kind of music as me.

“I felt like it was something different and that we were creating music and working on a recording style that people don't do.

“It always seemed very un-radio friendly, but I think with the whole noise scene breaking through now, people are a lot more open to a lot of different things.”

A Place To Bury Strangers will play The Welly, Beverley Road, Hull, on Thursday, May 15, at 8pm. Tickets cost £5/£3.50. Call (01482) 221113
