Date set for Hull and Humber return to sea

Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 14:55

Repairs to the Hull and Humber Clipper will take up to a week, according to boat surveyors.

The crew has been told they should be ready to set sail to Australia on Tuesday, December 1 – nine days after their collision.

On Sunday, the Cork, Ireland Clipper crashed into the Hull and Humber yacht, moments after they left Cape Town for leg three of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race.

The damage to the Hull and Humber was extensive, after the bow of Cork ripped into its side and left a gaping hole.

Now, crew have checked into a guesthouse in Cape Town while the repairs are carried out.

Meanwhile, Cork is likely to be fixed and back on the water in three to four days.

The Clipper Ventures race committee are deciding whether to give the Hull and Humber some points for this leg of the race, because the crash was not their fault.

The race has seven legs and takes 10 months. It is the world's most prestigious yacht race.

For the crew's reaction, see tomorrow's Mail.
