Maps show Hull's noisiest places
11:30 - 16-May-2008
Detailed maps showing the level of so-called environmental noise from major industries, roads and rail networks have been published online.
Hull is one of 23 urban areas in England featured in the new series of maps produced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
The Government hopes they will reduce unwanted pollution and protect designated quiet areas.
On the industry map, a cluster of hotspots close to the River Hull reflect the long-established industrial areas of Stoneferry and Wincolmlee.
Further east, standing in somewhat splendid isolation is the BP chemicals complex at Saltend and the nearby factories in Hedon Road.
On the rail map there are even fewer surprises with the noisiest areas mirroring the main rail routes through the city. Similarly, the road noise map highlights Hull's busiest roads with Castle Street and Hedon Road coming out on top.
There are also maps charting noise pollution around major airports, although Humberside Airport is not included.
Users can search Defra's website by postcode to access maps over a 24-hour period or during night-time only.
Environment minister Jonathan Shaw said: “Factors such as transport and industry are a necessary part of modern life, but we need to look at practical steps we can take to make people's lives more tranquil.”
