Flood fears over Hull academy
07:00 - 26-April-2008
Those living in and around the Hall Road area in north Hull have vowed to do all it takes to save the Princess Elizabeth Playing Fields from being built on.
The site is to be developed to make way for the city's northern academy, home to 1,200 pupils, under the Building Schools For The Future (BSF) programme.
Although planning permission for the northern academy has not been submitted to Hull City Council, residents fear it will happen soon.
More than 100 people gathered at the Rising Sun Pub in Mizzen Road to discuss it and have decided to first write to the Environment Agency outlining their concerns over flooding.
Doreen Richardson, of Tudor Drive, said: “The Princess Elizabeth playing fields have for years acted as a natural soak-away during very wet spells.
“The council plans to put up several two-storey blocks on that land, which will put pressure on the land and raise the water table.
“Any building on here will put our homes at risk of flooding.
David Martin, Hull's director of BSF said: “We aim to submit outline planning permission in the near future, which we hope will address residents' concerns.”
