Hull flood victim's insurance shock

07:00 - 21-April-2008

A HULL flood victim has been told by his insurance company he will have to pay more than £20,000 in excess charges if his house floods again.

Dennis Kelly, 71, of Warwickshire Close, west Hull, was flooded in June, causing more than £60,000 of damage to his bungalow.

He has now been told by AllianzCornhill, one of the largest insurers in the UK, the excess on his contents insurance is rising from £50 to £10,00 and the excess on his buildings insurance is rising from £50 to £11,50 , for flood damage.

The 71-year-old said: “I couldn't believe it when I got my renewal quote.

“I'm a pensioner. Where am I supposed to get that kind of money from?”

A spokesman for Allianz Insurance said the company would only review the price of the excess if it received confirmation drains near Mr Kelly's property had been inspected and cleared if necessary.
